Summary

We are seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join Temporal’s Release Engineering team, the group responsible for how we build, qualify, and ship Temporal software. The team’s goal is to deliver predictable, reliable, and fully automated releases that uphold the highest production standards and embody Temporal’s value of being Reliable as Gravity.

In this role, you will lead efforts to automate the entire release lifecycle using Temporal itself, working toward a long-term vision where scheduled releases require no human intervention. This initiative represents a cornerstone of Temporal’s operational excellence and a potential product opportunity that demonstrates Temporal’s power as a workflow platform.

You will work across the full release stack, from build systems and qualification frameworks to deployment pipelines and release automation.

What You'll Do

Build

  • Lead the full Software Development Lifecycle from requirements and design to implementation, deployment, and long-term operation.
  • Design and build automation systems that orchestrate every step of the release process using Temporal.
  • Develop and maintain build tooling, deployment workflows, and release infrastructure that ensure consistency and safety at scale.
  • Deliver reliable hotfix and scheduled release workflows that minimize risk and eliminate manual coordination.
  • Document system design and operational procedures to enable clarity, reuse, and maintainability.

Own

  • Take full ownership of the systems you build, ensuring they are scalable, dependable, and easy to operate.
  • Define and uphold high standards of technical excellence and reliability.
  • Operate production-grade systems and participate in the team’s on-call rotation as needed.
  • Continuously improve automation, release cadence, and feedback loops to reduce friction and human involvement.

Learn

  • Explore new ways to use Temporal to power the release and deployment lifecycle.
  • Deepen your understanding of Temporal’s architecture and service interactions.
  • Experiment with new automation patterns, testing strategies, and workflow designs that increase release confidence.

Collaborate

  • Work closely with all the engineering teams to evolve the release process and ownership model.
  • Participate in design reviews and contribute to system-wide improvements.
  • Share knowledge and best practices for building reliable, scalable automation systems.

What You'll Bring

  • A strong sense of ownership and pride in delivering systems that make releases seamless and reliable.
  • Motivation to automate repetitive processes and deliver operational simplicity.
Experience building or operating release engineering, build, or deployment systems at scale.
  • Strong technical judgment with the ability to balance safety, velocity, and maintainability.
  • Ability to work independently in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent collaboration and communication skills.

Skills & Technologies

  • Experience developing scalable, distributed systems in production environments.
  • Proficiency in one or more modern programming languages, ideally Go.
  • Familiarity with Temporal or other workflow orchestration systems strongly preferred.
  • Experience with Kubernetes and containerized deployments.
  • Hands-on experience with major cloud providers such as AWS or GCP.
  • Strong understanding of operating systems, networking, and release automation best practices.
  • Background in CI/CD pipeline design and build tooling.
Compensation
  • The estimated pay range for this role is $180,000 – $225,000, depending on experience and location.
  • Additionally, this role is eligible to participate in Temporal's equity plan.
Compensation ranges reflect salary and commission compensation (when applicable) across several geographic markets.
