Design and implement APIs and core business logic for managing distributed energy resources, ensuring compliance with industry standards, and mentoring junior engineers.
Are you interested in building the technical foundation of the worldwide transition to clean energy?
Voltus seeks to transform a diverse network of distributed energy resources (DERs) into reliable and responsive virtual power plants in wholesale energy markets. DERs can be anything behind an electric meter: demand response, batteries, micro-grids, residential solar, EV bus fleets, smart thermostats, and more.
The Product Platform team builds the core services and APIs that power Voltus's virtual power plants. This team is responsible for the business logic that manages a diverse and growing portfolio of distributed energy resources in wholesale energy markets. Our work spans the lifecycle of a resource from onboarding to grid response, and requires collaboration with internal and external partners. We approach our work from a systems engineering perspective, and emphasize high reliability, thoughtful abstractions, and root-cause solutions.
Our primary stack runs on AWS and includes Go, Python, React, Hashistack, and Docker. Our work involves some data-engineering and we use Clickhouse, Deltalake, Postgres, and Kafka. We value systems thinking and use techniques like Domain Driven Design to manage complexity.
We are also a team who owns both frontend and backend. While we require an engineer with deep experience in data and backend engineering, those open to or experienced with front-end engineering are also encouraged to apply.
This is an opportunity to do complex, interesting, and impactful work with a team of empathetic human beings. If you’re a holistic problem solver who’s excited to grow, learn, and contribute, we’d love to hear from you.
Areas we work in:
- Intuitive internal APIs and reliable data products to form the building blocks of our demand response platform
 - Public-facing API (https://api.voltus.co) and developer documentation
 - Unified platform for collecting and processing customer documents and utility data
 - Providing accurate, timely, and effective notifications for grid emergency events to coordinate customer and internal response
 - Internal tools (e.g. analytics, scripting environments) to provide pragmatic solutions for technically proficient internal users

Responsibilities for this role:
- Design and implement modular, composable primitives and APIs to capture core business logic for operating a growing portfolio of diverse energy resources
 - Understand energy industry rules, regulations, and standards to effectively design software that meets our needs. We are domain experts in our business in ways that exceed the expectations of individual engineering contributors at a normal tech startup.
 - Collaborate with external partners, such as metering, battery, solar, residential, or commercial energy management systems, utilities, and ISOs
 - Work closely with internal experts in energy markets to translate complicated market dynamics into discoverable, extensible, well-documented production code
 - Partner with internal operational teams to develop scalable processes for collecting, transforming, and accessing data
 - Contribute to the engineering roadmap, vision, and goals
 - Establish clear and specific success criteria with key stakeholders
 - Lead major initiatives on a wide range of work that includes new customer-facing products, complex automations for internal stakeholders, and data infrastructure scaling
 - Provide mentorship and coaching to more junior team members

Requirements:
- 8+ years of software engineering industry experience
 - Strong written and verbal communication skills
 - Understanding of modern API design and best practices
 - Experience with cloud native application design and development using APIs, containers, and infrastructure-as-code
 - A strong background in system architecture
 - Experience translating complex business domains into maintainable, scalable systems.
 - A passion for well-tested, readable, maintainable code

Please note that at this time, we do not sponsor visas or transfers for new hires. Voltus teammates need to be authorized to work from their home location (in the US or Canada, unless otherwise indicated on the role description).
Additionally, while Voltus is an all-remote workplace, we have limitations on where employees are able to work for regulatory and security reasons. We expect that Voltans are working primarily from their home country. Working while traveling to other countries must be approved as per our Global Remote Travel Policy.
At Voltus, we are proud to be an equal opportunity employer because we recognize that a diverse organization begins with a diverse candidate pool. This means we do not tolerate discrimination of any kind and are committed to providing equal employment opportunities regardless of your gender identity, race, nationality, religion, age, sexual orientation, veteran status, disability status, or marital status.
