Job Description

About the role:

Team you will be working with: Receive Risk

The Receive Risk team is part of the Global Product tribe, dedicated to ensuring customers can receive money quickly and securely. We build smart fraud detection and prevention systems to stop scammers and fraudsters from exploiting Wise or deceiving our customers. 

Supporting our full suite of receive products—including local and global account details, payment links, and invoices—we work closely with our financial crime teams to strike the perfect balance: seamless experiences for legitimate users, strong barriers against bad actors.

How we work

Our team is focused on building a great Acquiring experience for our business customers. To achieve this, we prioritise projects using a mix of data and intuition, focus on good execution and learn from our mistakes.

What will you be working on?

We're looking for a Backend Engineer to accelerate feature development for the Acquiring product. You'll quickly understand Wise’s existing feature development pipeline, deliver numerous new features to reduce risk in both current and upcoming products, and collaborate with Data Engineers to enhance our feature development systems and processes.

Qualifications

What do you need?

We are fully aware that it is uncommon for a candidate to have all skills required and we fully support everyone in learning new skills with us. So if you have some of those listed below and are eager to learn more we do want to hear from you!

  • Strong proficiency in backend programming languages like Java, Python or Go.

  • 5+ years of experience in backend development, with a focus on building scalable and reliable systems.

  • In-depth knowledge of database systems, including both SQL and NoSQL databases.

  • Experience in designing and implementing asynchronous systems, with a focus on scalability and performance.

  • Expertise in designing and implementing RESTful APIs.

  • Demonstrated experience working in product-led companies, with a strong product mindset that prioritises user needs and business goals.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to convey technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.

  • Ability to break down complex problems into shippable milestones that deliver value fast.

  • Proven experience in managing relationships with various stakeholders, ensuring alignment and understanding of project goals and requirements. Skilled in balancing stakeholder needs with technical feasibility.

Nice to Have:

  • Experience with batch and stream processing technologies, enabling efficient handling of large volumes of data in real-time and batch modes.

  • Knowledge of designing and implementing robust data pipelines, ensuring reliable data flow and integration across systems. Experience with tools and frameworks for data orchestration and transformation is a plus.

  • Good understanding of payment systems and financial transactions.
