The Role

The client is a California-based nonprofit working to improve public education and close the achievement gap. Since 1997, they’ve collaborated with schools to provide expanded learning programs and systemic solutions, reaching over 100,000 students annually. In 2024, they launched a five-year strategic plan centered on equity, featuring the Impact Portfolio—innovative, tech-driven initiatives aimed at transforming education.The Senior Software Engineer (AI & Digital Solutions) will play a key role in designing and developing scalable, impactful technology solutions that support our client's mission. As a senior-level individual contributor, you’ll be deeply involved in full-stack application development, AI feature integration, and architectural decisions that shape the foundation of our client's digital platforms.
You will collaborate with a cross-functional team—including product managers, designers, data scientists, and other engineers—to build and maintain high-quality software that advances equity and access in education. This role is ideal for an experienced engineer who is excited to write code daily, lead by example, and solve meaningful technical challenges with real-world impact.

What you’ll do:

  • Design, implement, and maintain full-stack web applications and backend services
  • Develop AI-powered features and integrate machine learning tools into product workflows
  • Write clean, testable, and efficient code while reviewing code from peers
  • Contribute to system architecture and data modeling decisions
  • Identify performance bottlenecks and implement optimizations across systems
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to understand requirements and deliver technical solutions
  • Participate in sprint planning, code reviews, and technical design discussions
  • Ensure software follows best practices in security, accessibility, and scalability
  • Stay current on emerging tools, technologies, and frameworks relevant to our stack

What we’re looking for:

  • Education & Experience
    • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field; equivalent
      experience also considered
    • 5+ years of software engineering experience, ideally in full-stack development
    • Experience building and scaling web applications in a cloud environment (preferably
      AWS)
    • Familiarity with AI/ML technologies, tools, and frameworks, even if not a specialist
    • Comfortable working in agile development environments
    • Mission-aligned experience in nonprofits or education is a plus
  • Technical Skills
    • Strong programming skills in JavaScript/TypeScript and frameworks such as React,
      Node.js, or similar
    • Proficiency in backend development, REST APIs, and working with relational databases
      like PostgreSQL
    • Familiarity with containerized environments (e.g., Docker, ECS)
    • Understanding of DevOps principles and CI/CD pipelines
    • Exposure to AI tools and libraries such as OpenAI APIs, TensorFlow, or scikit-learn

    • Passionate about applying technology for good and building equitable solutions
    • Detail-oriented with strong debugging and problem-solving skills
    • Excellent communication and collaboration abilities
    • Proactive, self-motivated, and eager to grow
