Discord's Legal team is looking for a Senior Privacy Counsel to help deliver privacy to over 200 million monthly users who come to Discord to hang out with their friends. This role will be our first dedicated Privacy lawyer, joining a team of product counsel and privacy program managers who sit at the intersection of legal compliance, product development, and user trust. In this role, you will work closely with engineers, data governance, privacy compliance, and product counsel to scale privacy protections across our platform. This role will report to Discord’s Senior Director, Product Law.

What you'll be doing:

  • Partner with engineering and compliance teams to build privacy-enhancing systems and infrastructure, on topics including vendor due diligence, third party privacy and security assessments, governance, risk and compliance, data use, and privacy and security incident response
  • Provide pragmatic, actionable, and globally-oriented advice to minimize legal risks while advancing business goals and objectives
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to help develop, improve, and enforce Discord’s data security policies, standards, and practices
  • Help ensure Discord’s data processing globally complies with all applicable privacy laws, including the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and state and federal consumer protection and privacy laws
  • Act as one of the company’s experts on issues related to privacy, ML development, and more
  • Partner with colleagues in Legal on privacy issues that arise in the development of new products and technologies
  • Lead internal projects, process development, and training to empower the business and your colleagues 

What you should have:

  • JD from an accredited law school
  • Admission to the California Bar or eligible to register as in-house counsel with the California Bar
  • 9+ years of experience in-house at a technology company, with additional experience at a well-respected law firm preferred
  • Ability to internalize the business's priorities, understand complex infrastructure and technology, think creatively, exercise judgment, and translate legal requirements into actionable (and flexible) advice
  • Demonstrated expertise with global privacy laws that impact consumers and technology companies, including the GDPR and state and federal privacy laws 
  • Experience and interest in advising on related issues that impact technology companies, including ad tech products, minor protection, and ML development
  • Ability to lead, organize, prioritize, and manage projects effectively

Candidates must reside in or be willing to relocate to the San Francisco Bay Area (Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Solano, and Sonoma counties). Relocation assistance may be available. 

There is no formal requirement to work from the office for this role, though the Hiring Manager would prefer the candidate to be onsite 2-3 days per week.

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $304,000 to $340,000 + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role and level. Within the range, individual pay is determined by additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Please note that the compensation details listed in US role postings reflect the base salary only, and do not include equity, or benefits.
