We are seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to join our Data Center Engineering organization.
In this role, you will drive engineering coordination efforts with external data center developers and partners while ensuring Graphcore’s infrastructure solutions meet the highest standards of reliability, efficiency, and scalability.
You will work closely with a multi-disciplinary team of technical leaders across engineering, infrastructure, and IT to deliver best-in-class data center mechanical systems supporting high-performance compute environments. The ideal candidate will combine deep mechanical engineering expertise with experience in mission-critical infrastructure environments.
This position is based in Austin, Texas, with approximately 10–20% travel expected for site visits, inspections, and factory acceptance testing.
The Data Center Engineering team is responsible for the design, development, and deployment of infrastructure that supports Graphcore’s advanced AI compute platforms.
The team collaborates with internal engineering groups, external consultants, and data center developers to deliver reliable and scalable environments for high-performance computing workloads.
Team members work across multiple disciplines—including mechanical, electrical, facilities, and IT infrastructure—to ensure that Graphcore’s data center deployments meet stringent performance, efficiency, and operational reliability requirements.
- Develop and review mechanical design standards and specifications, ensuring alignment with industry best practices and Graphcore’s reliability and operational goals.
• Perform detailed engineering analysis of mechanical system designs, ensuring efficient and reliable operation within data center environments.
• Provide technical direction to and coordinate with external consultants, developers, and engineering partners, reviewing and validating mechanical designs.
• Support the delivery of future-proof infrastructure solutions capable of scaling with evolving AI and high-performance computing workloads.
• Conduct site inspections, commissioning activities, and factory acceptance tests (FATs) for critical mechanical infrastructure and equipment.
• Define and provide guidance on owner requirements for mechanical systems design across data center projects.
• Collaborate with internal teams—including IT and infrastructure engineering—to ensure mechanical systems support HPC rack deployments and data center operations.
• Stay informed on industry trends, emerging technologies, and innovations within the data center and mission-critical infrastructure sectors.
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
• Strong technical knowledge of HVAC equipment and systems, including chillers, boilers, pumps, air handling equipment, ductwork and piping design, and sequences of control.
• Experience coordinating with IT and infrastructure teams to support the design of HPC or data center environments.
• Proven ability to collaborate across cross-disciplinary engineering teams and external partners.
• Excellent communication and technical documentation skills.
• Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced and rapidly evolving environment.
• Experience working with hyperscale data centers or colocation facilities, particularly Tier III or Tier IV environments as defined by the Uptime Institute.
• Professional Engineer (PE) license or equivalent international certification.
• Experience supporting commissioning, acceptance testing, and operational readiness for mission-critical facilities.
• Familiarity with data center infrastructure supporting AI or high-performance computing workloads.
