ESi’s Mechanics Practice evaluates the performance of products and systems against engineering standards, supporting investigations, litigation, and advisory work. Using advanced analytical and computational tools, the team delivers insights that enhance safety, reliability, and system performance.


Key Responsibilities

  • Plans, directs, and coordinates complex forensic investigations and multidisciplinary projects related to mechanical engineering failures, product liability, and personal injury matters.
  • Conducts and supervises field investigations of mechanical systems, machinery, and equipment.
  • Performs advanced engineering analysis using mechanics principles including stress analysis, failure analysis, fatigue, fracture mechanics, and dynamic loading.
  • Authors high-quality technical reports and expert opinions; reviews and oversees reports prepared by junior consultants.
  • Provides expert testimony at deposition and trial.
  • Conducts well-developed and well-prepared client presentations.
  • Establishes work plan and staffing for each phase of project, and arranges for assignment of project personnel.
  • Directs and coordinates projects and teams within prescribed schedule and budget scopes.
  • Works with Business Development to identify potential clients and strategies to build client base.
  • Actively participates in Business Development activities, including client meetings, presentations, and appropriate conferences.
  • Mentors consultants and senior consultants in technical and professional development.
  • Actively seeks to develop professionally in skills, experience, and industry reputation.

Qualifications

Education / Certifications / Licenses Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field required
  • Master’s degree or Ph.D. strongly preferred.
  • Licensed Professional Engineer (P.E.) required.

Experience Required

  • 15+ years of experience in mechanical engineering consulting, design, or forensic investigation.
  • Deep technical expertise in mechanics, stress analysis, fatigue, failure analysis, and/or machine design.
  • Track record authoring high-quality technical reports and/or peer-reviewed publications.
  • Experience providing expert testimony highly desirable; established client relationships and book of business strongly preferred.

Other Technical & Non-Technical Skills

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite; familiarity with mechanical analysis/FEA software (ANSYS, SolidWorks Simulation, or equivalent).
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills; ability to communicate complex mechanical engineering concepts clearly to legal and non-technical audiences.
  • Ability to interact with clients professionally and build and develop business internally and externally.
  • Must be available to travel occasionally as part of the national practice.

The pay range listed reflects a good-faith estimate of the compensation we expect to offer most candidates for this role. Total compensation includes a competitive base salary and bonus opportunity, with final pay determined by job-related factors such as experience, qualifications, individual performance, and overall company performance.


After internal discussions and market research, the current pay band for this opportunity is $170,000 to $250,000.


Physical Demands

This role requires frequently sitting or standing for extended periods of time and occasionally lifting and/or moving items weighing up to 50 pounds, with infrequent lifting up to 75 pounds. The work regularly requires bending, twisting, kneeling, crouching, and maintaining balance. This position frequently requires handling and operating specialized tools and equipment and working in a variety of physical positions, including occasionally accessing tight or confined spaces. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met to successfully perform the essential functions of this position. Work Environment

Work is performed in both office and field environments, including active construction sites, industrial settings, and damaged or compromised structures.
