We are seeking an experienced attorney to join our Legal TLM (Transactions/LRL/Manufacturing) team, partnering with the International Business Unit (IBU) Procurement teams at Lilly. This multidisciplinary position requires leveraging deep legal and business acumen with an understanding of the life sciences industry to partner with and provide legal and business advisory services to Lilly’s IBU Procurement and related functions. The primary areas of focus include:

Legal, Risk Mitigation, and Strategic Counseling. Provide legal and strategic counseling and substantive expertise to IBU procurement, with a focus on value creation, risk mitigation, and implementation of process and technology infrastructure to drive efficiency. Act as a transactional partner and strategic advisor to Lilly’s IBU procurement functions, with special emphasis on international business operations.

Initiatives include transactional support of IBU Procurement’s external contracting function, including coordination of local law issues and implementation of contract lifecycle management (CLM) infrastructure to improve efficiency and streamline processes across the enterprise and the IBU.

Global Services and Manufacturing. Lilly continues to be a leader in the global pharmaceutical space. The development of new and exciting medicines at Lilly has created a more complex, dynamic, and diversified global footprint and supporting services infrastructure. The number and variety of external products and services suppliers and clinical trial partners requires that Lilly closely cultivate and manage these key relationships, both internally and externally, to ensure that lifesaving medicines are produced in a reliable, efficient, and sustainable way. This position will be an integral part of expanding managing and sustaining the IBU procurement network and its supporting supplier base.

This position will be responsible for:

  • Identifying and resolving highly complex legal issues in IBU procurement and its related products and professional services space;

  • Drafting and negotiating a wide range of agreements (including transactional, governance-related, and services-focused agreements), building internal consensus, and driving successful business outcomes in situations of ambiguity;

  • Providing clear advice to internal clients and legal leadership, ensuring that guidance maximizes the performance of Lilly’s IBU procurement functions and supporting infrastructure;

  • Effectively communicating and translating complex technical, performance, and regulatory issues into understandable terms, recommending strategic and novel solutions;

  • Serving as the recognized source for a detailed and strategic understanding of Lilly’s relationships in the IBU procurement and related products and services spaces; and

  • Driving system/process implementation and adoption (e.g., CLM).

Additionally, this Counsel will:

  • Take ownership of matters and projects;

  • Identify legal issues for assigned matters;

  • Identify and implement functional solutions to improve operational excellence;

  • Assist other attorneys and stakeholders in resolving legal issues on cross-functional projects;

  • Develop knowledge of business and client concerns;

  • Keep abreast of changes in the law, including specifically, local law requirements;

  • Represent Lilly externally to customers and suppliers;

  • Resolve legal issues using negotiation skills and legal expertise;

  • Help direct work of outside counsel.

Basic Requirements:

  • J.D. from an ABA‑accredited law school or equivalent legal qualification from an accredited institution outside the United States.

  • Admission to the bar in at least one of the fifty U.S. states or qualification to practice law in Ireland (e.g., admitted as a Solicitor of the Law Society of Ireland or called to the Bar of Ireland).

  • Minimum of 5 years of legal experience related to the drafting, review, and negotiation of sophisticated transactions (preferably in the pharmaceutical or international business space), either practicing as a member of a law firm in a relevant area of law or practicing at an in-house law department, or a combination of the two.

  • Qualified applicants must be authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis. Lilly will not provide support for or sponsor work authorization or visas for this role, including but not limited to F-1 CPT, F-1 OPT, F-1 STEM OPT, J-1, H-1B, TN, O-1, E-3, H-1B1, or L-1.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with an ability to influence others.

  • Sound judgment, commitment to ethical conduct, and a high level of attention to detail.

  • Demonstrated business acumen.

  • Ability to effectively prioritize and manage workflows for multiple assignments in parallel.

  • Ability to effectively and responsively collaborate with team members, other lawyers, and members of management, across all levels of the organization.

  • Ability to quickly understand and integrate with Lilly Legal and pharmaceutical industry, and ability to absorb complex technical and scientific information on a project-by-project basis.

  • Travel: 10-20%.

Actual compensation will depend on a candidate’s education, experience, skills, and geographic location.  The anticipated wage for this position is

$195,000 - $314,600

Full-time equivalent employees also will be eligible for a company bonus (depending, in part, on company and individual performance).
