Job Overview:

The Database Architect’s role will be responsible for relational database architecture, collaborating with the data engineering and development teams to provide exceptional customer service and technical expertise. The Database Architect will help align business goals with technical design, focusing on performance tuning for new and existing database systems, as well as lead in the design and process for database migrations to the cloud. This is a “hands-on” position requiring solid technical skills with advanced skillsets in SQL Server performance and query optimization, as well as excellent interpersonal and communication skills.  This role will also interact with other database platforms.

Responsibilities:

  • Database Architect that specializes in SQL Server performance with heavy collaboration with the development organization regarding SQL coding standards and T-SQL optimization.

  • Hands-on providing best practices and guidelines for the cloud-based implementation (PostgreSQL, MongoDB)

  • Excellent understanding of database design and development

  • Experience with very large databases and/or data warehousing

  • Familiarity with RDBMS principles, database design, and normalization

  • Possess the ability to learn how applications work by analyzing schema, querying data, and reviewing SQL

  • Perform problem determination (root cause analysis) and document the source of problems and their resolution.

  • Apply Microsoft Best Practices with regards to developing T-SQL queries and stored procedures.

  • Apply Microsoft Best Practices with regards to database maintenance thresholds for consistency checks, index fragmentation, and statistics

  • Advanced level of reviewing execution plans and not only determine possible indexing changes, but also know how to refactor T-SQL statements to achieve optimal performance.

  • Ability to become an expert on a specific domain of technology and provide technical consultation to others

  • Knowledge of SQL Server subsystems and internals

  • Experience in developing high-volume, scalable, data-intensive systems

  • Entrenched skill in designing and developing highly optimized database code

  • Highly skilled in urgent real-time troubleshooting

  • Experience working with extended events/SQL profiler and other troubleshooting tools.

  • Working knowledge of DBMS hardware, including RAM, CPU, Permanent Storage, I/O, and other capacity-related resources

  • Ability to create or review architecture and specification documents, ensuring database security, integrity, and performance

  • Excellent visual, written, and verbal communications with the ability to intuitively put ideas into tangible form

  • Demonstrated ability in moving a software product through the full development lifecycle

  • Self-starter who is able to articulate the current complexity of SQL server Schema/Data modeling and propose a creative/innovative way to unpack the Tech Debt.

  • Collaborate with architecture and development teams to advise on data platform best practices

  • Delivered data architecture in alignment with our enterprise architecture standards and advocated for enterprise architecture models and patterns.

  • Acquire and maintain top-quality technical skills in a broad range of DBMSs, technologies, and techniques

  • Facilitate the reuse of code, components, and proven patterns supporting data and modern architecture

  • Collaborate with business, product, and technology teams early in the M&A and product lifecycle to infuse end-to-end architecture thinking, including functional and non-functional aspects, into the conversation. Craft a high-level design early in the lifecycle and elaborate it to lower levels of detail as the conversation progresses.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or Information Systems, or equivalent work experience

  • Minimum of 5 years of hands-on design and implementation experience on Microsoft SQL Server versions (2005-2022)

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in hands-on design and implementation of complex systems, including data and reporting.

  • Minimum of 3 years of hands-on experience in cloud-based implementation of complex systems (AWS preferred)

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in the following technical disciplines: application development, middleware, database management or operations, security, integration

Core Competencies:

  • Experience with query and indexing best practices, data partitioning

  • Excellent knowledge of system views and system stored procedures using T-SQL.

  • Excellent communication skills that translate business problems into technical solutions

  • Consult with customers to solve business problems by adapting current technology and/or capitalizing on emerging technology for competitive advantage to meet the strategic objectives

  • Conduct demonstrations and presentations to executive management of prototypes and proof-of-concepts.

  • Understanding of agile methods (SAFe) and processes, and capability of supporting agile product teams by providing advice and guidance on opportunities, impact and risks, taking account of technical and architectural debt

Technical Competencies:

  • Microsoft certification, or training from industry-leading consultants, such as Brent Ozar or SQLskills

  • Experience with Oracle and PostgreSQL

  • AWS Certification

  • Proven experience in developing conceptual, logical, and physical data models for customer and product domains.

  • Experience with advanced SQL Server features, such as service broker, resource governor, query store, openjson, table-valued parameters, etc.


 

Pay Range:

$105,600-$176,000/year
 
Actual base salary varies based on factors, including but not limited to, relevant skill, prior experience, education, base salary of internal peers, demonstrated performance, and geographic location.
