About the Role:

We are seeking a seasoned and innovative Senior Data Scientist with a strong technical foundation and deep curiosity to help us launch and scale our Small and Micro Business payments product.

This role offers a rare opportunity to build core fraud and risk detection capabilities from the ground up, directly influencing the security and integrity of a product with global reach. As Senior Data Scientist, you will be part of Remitly's Small and Micro Business team, focusing on fraud detection, risk management, and compliance. This is a unique opportunity where you will work at the intersection of product, data, and risk to build new systems from the ground up. You will play a pivotal role in launching a product that will transform cross border business payments globally.

You will take ownership of building and operationalizing machine learning models and analytical frameworks to detect and prevent fraud in real time, influence product features with your insights, and shape how we scale safely and efficiently.

This is a hybrid role to support team collaboration and is based in Remitly's office in Seattle, Washington.

You Will:

  • Develop systems that proactively identify and prevent fraudulent activities, ensuring a secure payment environment.
  • Design comprehensive risk assessment frameworks to evaluate transactions, business entities, and customer behaviors and mitigate potential risks.
  • Work closely with product, program, engineering, compliance, and risk teams to create solutions that balance robust fraud prevention with an exceptional customer experience.
  • Analyze complex datasets to identify trends, anomalies, and emerging fraud patterns to stay ahead of potential threats.
  • Develop and deploy machine learning models to detect and mitigate fraud risks effectively.
  • Communicate insights and recommendations to senior stakeholders, shaping key business strategies.

You Have:

  • 5+ years of experience in data science, analytics, or risk modeling, preferably in fraud, risk, or financial crime prevention.
  • Experience building and deploying ML models in production environments.
  • Expertise in Python, SQL, and data analytics tools.
  • Deep understanding of fraud detection techniques and risk management methodologies.
  • Experience working with real-time data pipelines and large-scale financial datasets.
  • Ability to translate complex data insights into actionable strategies for fraud prevention and compliance.
  • Experience of working cross-functionally. Strong data communication skills, including data visualization, technical writing, and business writing
  • Understanding of AML regulations and financial risk frameworks is a plus.

Compensation Details. The starting base salary range for this position is typically $ 168000 -$200,000. In the U.S., Remitly employees are shareholders in our Company and equity is part of our total compensation plan.
