The Role

We're seeking a Senior Backend Engineer who thrives in fast-paced, early-stage environments. You’ll work directly with the company’s founders and help shape both the product and technical direction. This is a high-impact, high-ownership role ideal for someone who enjoys building across the stack and shipping features quickly.

We value clear communication, empathy for customers, and a collaborative mindset. Since we're a fully remote company, success in this role also requires self-direction and strong time management.

The ideal person will be passionate about building consumer data privacy software, and will have experience across most of these areas:

  • Python / Django

  • Working in Django at Scale

  • Django-rest-framework and/or django-ninja

  • Utilizing various testing strategies to deliver high quality, robust code

  • Asynchronous jobs execution / event brokers (Celery / RabbitMQ / Redis)

  • Databases - Postgres and NoSQL (ElasticSearch, MongoDB, Cassandra)

  • User data security best practices

  • Designing maintainable, scalable backend software components

  • Implementing integrations with third-party APIs

  • Diagnosing and addressing performance issues

  • Kubernetes, microservices, and resource management

  • AWS (Preferred), GCP, Azure

  • HTML and Javascript experience

  • Bonus if you have experience working in the consumer privacy or consumer data industries, React, HTMX and automation tools

Qualifications
  • 6+ years experience as a backend or full-stack engineer building web applications

  • 3+ years experience with Python and Django

  • Demonstrated knowledge of Computer Science fundamentals

  • Maturity, self-awareness, empathy, a strong work ethic, attention to detail, and a positive attitude

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or Software Engineering, or equivalent work experience

Location

Optery is headquartered in the San Francisco Bay Area, but operates as a fully-remote global team. While this is not necessarily a U.S.-based position, working regular U.S. business hours, i.e. U.S. Eastern, Central, Mountain, or Pacific time zones, is strongly preferred.  We embrace asynchronous work, but overlap with U.S. time zones is important for team collaboration.

Compensation and Benefits
  • $60K - $100K

  • Paid time off policy

  • Stipend for home office setup

Equal Opportunity

Optery values diversity and is an equal opportunity employer. Optery does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, sex (including pregnancy and gender identity), national origin, political affiliation, sexual orientation, marital status, disability, genetic information, age, membership in an employee organization, retaliation, parental status, military service, or other non-merit factor.
