Sr Data Scientist - GD07AE

We’re determined to make a difference and are proud to be an insurance company that goes well beyond coverages and policies. Working here means having every opportunity to achieve your goals – and to help others accomplish theirs, too. Join our team as we help shape the future.

The Hartford’s CEO has committed publicly to shareholders that we will lead the insurance industry in AI. The AI Accelerator – Claims & Operations is at the heart of that commitment, serving as the company’s innovation hub and center of excellence for scouting, researching, and prototyping emerging AI technologies.

Our Mission: to deliver scalable, end-to-end solutions, reusable capabilities, and knowledge that drive real business impact.

Our current focus is developing agentic AI workflows to automate and transform claims processing, while also advancing other strategic AI projects across Claims & Operations. This is a rare opportunity to shape how AI innovation is researched and deployed across an enterprise committed to leading its industry.

This role can have a Hybrid or Remote work schedule. Candidates who live near one of our locations will have the expectation of working in an office 3 days a week (Tuesday through Thursday).

Responsibilities & Qualifications

  • Research & Scouting: Stay ahead of the fast-moving AI landscape by studying, prototyping, and assessing emerging technologies (LLMs, agentic systems, multimodal AI, advanced ML). Help determine where and how they can create business value.
  • Solution Design: We develop first-time solutions to unique challenges, requiring strong analytic skills, resourcefulness, experience in crafting AI solutions, and judgment about the feasibility of different approaches.
  • Software Development: We deploy AI systems in production, so you need to write production-grade code in Python. This includes object-oriented programming, unit testing, version control using Git, and familiarity with (or curiosity about) design patterns and best practices in software architecture.
  • Experimentation & Evaluation: We guide the development of AI solutions by evidence and measure performance of specific steps and end-to-end solutions. You will need to design pragmatic experiments with solid methodology and meaningful metrics.
  • Data processing & Analysis: While our focus is on unstructured data with Gen AI, we still regularly handle tabular datasets, requiring mastery of the traditional data science toolkit (e.g., pandas, SQL, Excel, matplotlib).
  • Communication & Collaboration: We partner on projects with other teams and serve as a Gen AI expertise hub across the enterprise. A collaborative approach and effective communication are key to your success.

Additional qualifications:

  • Professional experience with Gen AI using LLMs
  • Experience working in Agile
  • Experience with cloud architecture, with bonus points to GCP

Candidate must be authorized to work in the US without company sponsorship. The company will not support the STEM OPT I-983 Training Plan endorsement for this position.
