Xero is hiring a Product Compliance Advisor with a current and active CPA or CA qualification to guide the development of income tax, sales tax, payroll and reporting features for US customers. This role is focused on translating federal and state compliance obligations into practical guidance for product, legal and engineering teams. You’ll advise across multiple product areas to ensure regulatory standards are met.

You will work closely with product teams as a specialist advisor, helping shape feature design and roadmap decisions by embedding tax and accounting compliance from the outset.

Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the internal advisor on US tax, payroll and accounting compliance across product teams
  • Define product compliance requirements based on current and proposed federal and state legislation
  • Translate statutory obligations into functional specifications and documentation for product, design and engineering
  • Conduct impact assessments of regulatory updates and provide written guidance to stakeholders
  • Review proposed features and contribute to roadmap planning based on identified regulatory risks or obligations
  • Maintain internal documentation to support compliance interpretations, controls and audit readiness
  • Advise legal, risk and GTM teams on regulatory requirements that affect customer-facing policies or product delivery
  • Support product expansion, M&A assessments and cross-functional initiatives with clear compliance input
  • Collaborate with regional compliance peers to maintain alignment and consistency across global product lines

Requirements:

  • Current and active CPA or CA qualification from a recognized body (e.g. AICPA, CPA Canada, CA ANZ)
  • 5+ years of experience in US income and sales tax, accounting or regulatory compliance in SaaS, fintech or public accounting
  • Direct experience interpreting and applying federal and state-level requirements including income tax, payroll, sales tax and financial reporting
  • Strong capability in documenting regulatory interpretations and communicating risk positions clearly to internal stakeholders
  • Experience partnering with product or engineering teams on implementation of regulatory obligations
  • Based in the US and able to work PST or MST business hours
  • Experience working in or alongside product teams building tax or accounting software, such as in a tax product manager or tax systems advisor role
  • Ability to translate end-user tax or accounting needs into technical requirements, and familiarity with software development lifecycles in a regulatory context
  • Practical problem solver who thrives on turning complex tax rules into clear, user-friendly solutions
  • Comfortable navigating ambiguity and influencing product decisions
  • Strong communicator who builds trust across legal, product and engineering teams
  • Collaborative, curious and quick to connect the dots across multiple workstreams

Xero is a global business, so while your focus is in-region, it will be necessary for you to regularly work with teams who are globally dispersed and may result in meetings and collaboration with colleagues in other time zones (and outside the “standard business hours” of your region). Inside Xero we have a thriving community of regulatory subject matter experts who can support and challenge each other, to build excellence in what we do, how we do it and the speed we can respond to market changes. You are seen as a leader in this space and are a mentor to the wider Xero community of subject matter experts.
