Your future team
We are looking for a Principal Engineer to join our App Observability team. Your daily work will help our fellow engineers to work more productively, deliver effortlessly, and the decisions you make will impact our overall products quality.
Our team's mission is to help teams build fast experiences and make sure they stay fast. We build tools for measuring, monitoring and catching regressions in performance.
Your job will be to help leading the team to tackle big problems, and deliver high quality libraries and tools that power all of our products. You will be joining an experienced team of problem solvers, who have an eye for detail, and desire to push industry standards.
As a Principal Engineer in the team, you will focus on providing technical direction, thought leadership and Influencing strategy on improving Atlassian reliability and performance posture through advanced tooling, establishing best practices and standards, proposing and reviewing technical solution and architecture, ensuring we are building cost efficient solutions and being able to jump in the details and lead initiatives to completion.
Your background
  • Build high-performing client code that is fast, testable, scalable, and high quality
  • Collaborate closely with other engineers, designers and managers to understand user pain points and iterate on great solutions
  • Lead code reviews and documentation, and take on complex bug fixes
  • Solid experience in:
    • Full-stack solutions, going from Javascript in the Frontend to the backend solutions (e.g. Nodejs, Go, Java), including databases (e.g. PostgreSQL) & caching solutions (e.g. Redis).
    • Building, running, and monitoring large scale distributed systems on AWS, with a focus on capacity management and troubleshooting platforms at scale
  • Experience with technically leading large scale projects from design to delivery in a collaborative manner. This involves coaching and mentoring more junior engineers and setting them up for success.
  • Keen interest in open source and learning new technologies
  • Understanding of how to build performant, decoupled, testable, maintainable code
  • Enjoyment of sharing knowledge with teammates, and working collaboratively when you need help

Even better if you have
  • Experience working on platform teams
  • Solid understanding of JavaScript (language and ecosystem), and great experience with building frontend applications using React
  • Experience optimising the performance of applications or working with observability solutions at scale
  • Proficiency with Observability concepts e.g Tracing, SLOs, Metrics, etc and projects like OpenTelemetry.
  • Exposure to data processing and/or analysis - our systems produce and processes billions of data points every day
