What you'll do:As a Principal Product Safety Strategist, your key area of responsibility will be leading the development of scalable frameworks that ensure early identification and resolution of product risks while balancing innovation, compliance, and business objectives. You will be responsible for leading the innovation and standardization of cutting-edge hazard identification and risk assessment methodologies tailored to evolving technologies. You will need to work closely with cross-functional teams (R&D, Engineering, Product, Legal), senior leadership, and external stakeholders to maintain and enhance our market leadership in safety and reliability.
To be successful in this role you will to have the ability to translate complex technical risk information into actionable insights for executive and legal audiences. In addition, the successful candidate will have expert program management and change management skills with an ability to identify needs, develop effective solutions, and manage large-scale safety initiatives through completion. The successful candidate will also be able to manage multiple timelines and contrasting priorities to ensure safety requirements align with overarching business objectives.
How you'll make an impact:- Influence overall product strategy by articulating the safety, interoperability, and AI ethics implications of proposed features and technologies, ensuring alignment with long-term business goals and translating complex risks for executive decision-making.
- Continuously monitor and interpret emerging technologies (especially AI), regulatory landscapes, and industry trends to proactively shape and adapt the corporate product safety strategy and associated governance frameworks.
- Architect, oversee the development and implementation of, and guide the continuous evolution of comprehensive product safety frameworks, processes, and compliance procedures to meet or exceed international and industry best practices.
- Develop, guide the implementation of, and ensure the continuous improvement of a robust AI product safety framework, leveraging deep AI expertise to address unique risks such as algorithmic bias, data privacy, model robustness, and unintended consequences of autonomous decision-making.
- Lead the overall strategy for identifying, assessing, and mitigating safety hazards and operational risks, with a particular focus on emerging technologies like AI and next-generation products.
- Provide expert leadership and oversight for complex, multifaceted risk assessments (e.g., STPA, FMEA, FTA, HAZOP), including those specialized for AI systems, and champion the adoption of innovative methodologies like predictive analytics for early hazard detection.
- Oversee the definition and guide the implementation of effective mitigation strategies for critical safety risks, ensuring robust solutions for AI-specific hazards related to data integrity, model explainability, security, and operational boundaries.
- Act as a subject matter expert on product safety, including AI safety, AI ethics, and secure interoperability, providing strategic advice and expert guidance to cross-functional teams (R&D, Engineering, Product, Legal) and senior leadership.
- Mentor and advise team members and cross-functional partners on advanced safety principles, risk management techniques, development of safety-critical systems, and the nuances of AI safety.
- Spearhead the development and contribute to the delivery of specialized training programs on key areas like AI product safety and secure interoperability, fostering a strong culture of safety, ethical responsibility, and risk awareness across the organization.
- Collaborate strategically with cross-functional teams to identify business opportunities where robust safety practices can be a differentiator, solve complex safety-related challenges, and guide initiatives using data-driven insights.
- Actively participate in the Connected Car and Data Standards initiatives.
- Provide support and input in Privacy Office activities as directed.
- 15+ years of experience in implementing, and managing comprehensive product safety programs.
- Experience with vehicle technology and telematics-adjacent systems or systems engineering.
- Experience working within a technical or engineering organization/knowledge of the high-technology industry is an asset
- Deep expertise in Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies, including reinforcement learning, neural networks, generative models, and the mitigation of AI system risks (FATE).
- Mastery of hazard identification and risk assessment methodologies such as FMEA, FTA, STPA, and HAZOP.
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field (or equivalent combination of education and experience).
- Strong command of program management methodologies (Agile, Waterfall, Hybrid) and proven success in organizational change management.
- Exceptional ability to communicate complex technical concepts clearly to diverse audiences, from R&D teams to executive leadership.
- Deep familiarity with global safety and regulatory frameworks (ISO, SAE, UL, FCC, CPSC, NHTSA) and their application to connected vehicle systems.
