About the teamZillow Rentals is a high-growth, high-focus team building a marketplace that connects renters with property owners and managers, making it easier to move from one home to the next. We deliver digital tools and advertising solutions that support partners in marketing properties, signing leases, and collecting payments—creating a seamless, end-to-end online experience within Zillow’s broader mission to reimagine real estate.

About the role

As Principal Product Manager, you will drive the strategy and execution of Zillow’s tenant screening business, shaping innovative solutions that build customer trust and support operational excellence. Your work will have a direct impact on millions of renters and property owners, ensuring our screening products are seamless, fair, and compliant—helping Zillow deliver on its mission to make moving easier for everyone.

In this role you will:

  • Own the multi-year product strategy and roadmap for Zillow’s screening ecosystem, covering identity verification, credit and background data, and regulatory compliance.

  • Partner with Engineering to evolve the screening platform for greater scalability, reliability, modularity, and speed to innovate.

  • Collaborate with Legal, Compliance, and Partner teams to ensure reliability and fairness across millions of screening decisions.

  • Define success metrics for performance, trust, and conversion, establishing dashboards and continuous learning loops.

  • Translate complex technical and regulatory dependencies into clear, outcome-oriented narratives for senior leadership.

  • Mentor other PMs across the Rentals organization, raising the bar for product craftsmanship and strategic depth.

This role has been categorized as a Remote position. “Remote” employees do not have a permanent corporate office workplace and, instead, work from a physical location of their choice, which must be identified to the Company. U.S. employees may live in any of the 50 United States, with limited exceptions.

In California, Connecticut, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Washington state, and Washington DC the standard base pay range for this role is $178,300.00 - $284,700.00 annually. This base pay range is specific to these locations and may not be applicable to other locations. In Colorado, Hawaii, Illinois, Minnesota, Nevada, Ohio, Rhode Island, and Vermont the standard base pay range for this role is $169,300.00 - $270,500.00 annually. The base pay range is specific to these locations and may not be applicable to other locations.

In addition to a competitive base salary this position is also eligible for equity awards based on factors such as experience, performance and location. Actual amounts will vary depending on experience, performance and location. Employees in this role will not be paid below the salary threshold for exempt employees in the state where they reside.

Who you are

You bring a rare mix of strategic vision, operational depth, and obsession with customer trust. You’ve built products in high-stakes, regulated environments where compliance, accuracy, and user experience all matter deeply.

  • Systems Thinker: You design resilient ecosystems, not one-off features — balancing product, data, policy, and operations.

  • Customer-Obsessed: You connect renter and property manager pain points to measurable product outcomes.

  • Enterprise-Grade Operator: You’ve scaled products in regulated domains such as financial services, identity, or trust & safety.

  • Influential Leader: You excel at driving alignment across engineering, design, and operations without relying on hierarchy.

  • Clear Communicator: You make complexity legible — translating ambiguity into crisp decisions and measurable progress.

  • Builder’s Mindset: You’re equally fluent in strategic frameworks and hands-on product validation.

Your Experience:

  • 8+ years in a Product Management role, with a focus on building consumer-facing technology products. Ecommerce and/or marketplace experience preferred.

  • Customer-obsessed mindset, able to balance the needs of multiple personas to deliver products embraced by the market.

  • Track record of shipping and scaling products that handle sensitive data or high transaction volume.

  • Strong project management and organizational skills.

  • Experience influencing cross-functional teams and executives through data, storytelling, and clarity of thought.

  • Outstanding eye for business, and ability to make data informed decisions with big financial impact.

  • Strong sense of ownership and capability to prioritize across multiple intersecting initiatives and deliver solutions to market.
