Job Description Summary

The Principal Network Engineer is a hands-on senior level technical role responsible for designing, implementing, and managing highly complex network infrastructures to ensure the reliability, security, and scalability of enterprise systems. The Principal Network Engineer will provide strategic technical leadership, oversee large-scale projects, and mentor other network engineers. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in routing, switching, firewalls, VPNs, and cloud networking, along with a deep understanding of network architecture best practices.

Job Responsibilities:
 

Network Design and Architecture

  • Lead the design and implementation of large-scale, highly available network infrastructures (LAN/WAN, data centers, wireless, etc.).
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to align network architecture with business needs and technology strategies.
  • Develop and maintain comprehensive network design documentation including diagrams and configurations.
  • Evaluate and recommend new technologies to improve network performance and scalability.
  • Design and manage cloud-based network infrastructures.

Network Implementation and Management

  • Oversee the deployment and configuration of network hardware and software.
  • Manage and optimize network performance, ensuring high availability and reliability.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex network issues, providing root cause analysis and solutions.
  • Ensure ongoing and comprehensive of the network environment.
  • Lead large-scale network upgrade and migration projects.

Security and Compliance

  • Implement and maintain network security best practices (firewalls, IDS/IPS, VPNs) protect against unauthorized access and threats.
  • Ensure compliance with industry standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Conduct regular security assessments and audits.

Leadership and Mentorship

  • Provide technical mentorship and guidance to network team members.
  • Lead technical discussions and present solutions to stakeholders.
  • Stay updated with the latest industry trends, technologies, and certifications, and recommend their adoption when appropriate.
  • Develop and deliver training programs to enhance team skills and capabilities.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Work closely with IT, development, and operations teams to support and enhance network services.
  • Participate in project planning and provide technical expertise for network-related initiatives.
  • Communicate effectively with stakeholders to understand requirements and deliver solutions.

Continuous Improvement

  • Stay current with industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices.
  • Identify opportunities for network optimization and process improvements.
  • Contribute to the development of network-related policies and procedures.

Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information security, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and/or related professional work experience.
  • 10+ years of experience in network engineering, with at least 5 years in a senior or lead role.
  • Proven experience in designing and managing enterprise-level networks (data center, WAN/LAN, cloud).
  • Relevant certifications such as CCIE, CCNP, or equivalent are highly desirable.
  • Strong expertise in routing protocols (BGP, OSPF, EIGRP) and switching technologies.
  • Proficiency with network hardware (routers, switches, firewalls) and software.
  • Experience with network security technologies i.e., VPNs, firewalls, and IDS/IPS systems.
  • Experience with network monitoring and management tools.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Proven ability to lead technical teams and mentor network team engineers.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to translate technical concepts into business terms.
  • Ability to troubleshoot complex networking issues and lead problem-resolution efforts.

Compensation may vary based on the job level, your geographic work location, position incentive plan and exemption status.

 

Base Salary Range:

$143,000.00 - $214,500.00
