The Need  

For over 25 years, IJM has pioneered the work to protect vulnerable people from violence. 9 out of 9 times in the last decade, IJM’s Justice System Strengthening Projects have reduced slavery and violence between 50 and 85% for very large populations of people in poverty. As we grow to expand our impact to protect 500 million people from violence, we are seeking a Principal Advisor, Modern Slavery. 

 

The Principal Advisor, Modern Slavery reports to the Global Vice President, Program Excellence and oversees the development of the vision and strategy for anti-slavery programs across IJM’s international offices. The Principal Advisor, Modern Slavery will also have matrixed management authority over key IJM leaders who will implement and execute the strategies to mobilize key global, regional and local partners to transform local justice systems to rapidly and sustainably reduce the prevalence of slavery. The Principal Advisor will also be responsible for setting and enforcing anti-slavery program standards, and providing expert consultation as needed. 

 

This position is hybrid (onsite Tuesdays & Thursdays) if located in the Washington, DC area or remote for non-local candidates. It reports to the Global Vice President, Program Excellence and is only available for candidates with the right to work in the US.   

 

Responsibilities 

 

Activation and Thought Leadership: Develop and lead IJM’s corporate activation strategy, activation of targeted global agents of change, and engagement in global anti-slavery thought leadership. Work with IJM anti-slavery teams, key global actors and influencers on relevant global platforms to ensure global anti-slavery thought leadership 

 

  • Lead IJM’s Corporate Activation work, collaborating with key internal and external stakeholders on strategy and tactics, and identifying project-level opportunities 

  • Lead Global Activation Partnerships teams for priority global agents of change, including co-designing engagement strategies, leading implementation of those strategies, and reporting on progress against goals 

  • Assist global marketing team to design and develop products and services to equip external-facing IJM staff to engage agents of change effectively  

  • Conduct targeted thought-leadership activities (publications, speaking engagement, relationship building and networking) with priority anti-slavery entities.  

  • Work with regional teams to cultivate strategic corporate relationships in the cocoa sector 

  • Support global and regional grants team to acquire and manage grants related to modern slavery 

Lead the Development of IJM’s Anti-Slavery Model and Interventions 

  • Lead Programs to develop and implement sequenced and comprehensive models to protect people from slavery which are founded on IJM’s Protection Model, Program Standards, Theory of Change and Protection Measurement Framework. Ensure protection models are built according to best practices identified from IJM’s programming, with the ability to measure and test interventions for the refinement of the models. Each Program Model will reflect IJM’s Protection Model framework and be fully developed within a Program’s context.  

  • Lead the creation and development of global anti-slavery interventions, products and services to enhance and accelerate programming and activation of key agents of change.    

Facilitate Learning and Innovation 

  • Develop communities of practice for IJM’s anti-slavery program staff to share best practices, and facilitate other cross-Regional learning platforms 

  • From a comprehensive understanding of best practice in the anti-slavery movement, enable IJM teams to enhance their approaches through access to tools, connections, research and other resources from beyond IJM’s programming 

  • Identify opportunities for new innovations to accelerate IJM’s progress to protecting people in poverty from slavery and incorporate new approaches and shared learning from other case types into IJM’s programming. 

Evaluate Anti-Slavery Programs: To ensure IJM is investing wisely so that our programs are best positioned to protect 500 million people from violence by 2030, advise the Global VP, Program Excellence on program likelihood of success (including scalability) on a regular basis, through: 

  • Routine engagement with anti-slavery Program and Project leaders  

  • Formal scheduled Program Assessments using a well-designed rubric that has been tested and approved by Regional and Global Programs leaders 

  • Monitoring the efficacy of the global KPI’s as a measure of program impact and effectiveness 

  • Providing Phase Gate guidance to relevant Program teams and advising on Phase Gate outcomes. 

 

Qualifications:   

 

Education & Experience  

  • Minimum of 10 years of relevant work experience 

  • Minimum of five years of experience building and effectively managing high performing teams, in direct and matrixed management environments 

  • Minimum of five years of experience interfacing with the MDS corporate responsibility liaisons and supply chain experts 

  • Proven ability to work with a diverse team of experts and specialists 

  • Demonstrated excellence working with multi-national teams 

  • Proven strategic thinker with experience in programming, networking and thought leadership specific to MDS 

  • Graduate degree in law, international development, business administration or equivalent combination of bachelor’s degree and relevant work experience. 

Technical Competencies  

  • Expertise in international development, advocacy, advancement or similar field; 

  • Significant international experience required 

  • Exceptional public speaker 

  • Superb written and verbal communication skills 

  • Grant oversight experience preferred. 

Non-Technical Competencies  

  • Mature Christian faith with proven ability to lead others in Christian spiritual formation 

  • Sales and marketing skillset with strong networking ability 

  • High credibility with staff and partners 

  • High cultural intelligence and cross-border experience
