The Outpatient Coding Quality Associate is responsible for ensuring the accuracy, completeness, and compliance of medical coding across healthcare services. This role involves reviewing coded records for quality assurance, identifying areas of improvement, and supporting coders through feedback and education to maintain high standards in coding practices. The associate will work closely with medical coders, auditors, and compliance teams to uphold regulatory and organizational requirements.
Here is what you can expect as our Quality Coding Associate:
Conduct retrospective and concurrent audits of coded clinical documentation to ensure accuracy of ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS coding.
Review coding practices against official coding guidelines, payer policies, and internal standards.
Provide detailed feedback to medical coders, identify error patterns, and recommend corrective actions or training.
Collaborate with the coding leadership team to develop and refine quality improvement initiatives.
Maintain detailed audit records and assist in preparing quality performance reports and dashboards.
Stay current on industry regulations, including CMS, HIPAA, and payer-specific rules.
Assist in training and mentoring new or underperforming coders as needed.
Participate in internal and external coding audits and assist in implementing corrective action plans.
Ensure documentation supports medical necessity and aligns with coded diagnoses and procedures.
Serve as a resource for coding questions and provide clarification on complex cases.
High school diploma or equivalent required.
Certified Professional Coder (CPC), Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), or equivalent coding certification required.
Certification in auditing (e.g., CPMA) is a plus.
Minimum 3 years of hands-on inpatient coding experience
At least 2 years of experience in coding quality review or auditing is preferred
