About the Project

Proper is seeking a Database Engineer / Data Analyst for a short-term, project-based engagement to help organize and structure historical M&A (mergers & acquisitions) data.

This data currently exists in multiple formats (spreadsheets, PDFs, and other source documents). The goal of this project is to transform that information into a consistent, structured, and usable database that enables benchmarking and comparative analysis for future M&A and investment decisions.

This is an ideal role for someone who enjoys turning messy data into clean, organized, and analyzable datasets.

Project Scope & Responsibilities
  • Review and consolidate M&A-related data received from ~30 target companies.
  • Extract and normalize data from spreadsheets, PDFs, and other source formats.
  • Design and build a structured database to house standardized financial and operational data.
  • Organize financial data into clearly defined categories to support benchmarking and analysis.
  • Ensure consistency, accuracy, and data integrity across all entries.
  • Recommend and implement a Microsoft-based solution (Excel, Access, or similar).
  • Document the structure and logic of the database for future internal use.
  • Partner with internal stakeholders to validate assumptions and data categorization.
Working Expectations
  • Full-time or Part-time commitment over a 3–6 week period.
  • Some overlap with CST business hours preferred, but not required for the full workday.
  • Fully remote/offshore role.
What Success Looks Like
  • A clean, well-structured, and documented database that consolidates all historical M&A data.
  • Financial data organized into standardized categories that enable easy benchmarking.
  • A tool that can be reused and expanded for future M&A opportunities.

RequirementsRequired Skills & Experience
  • Fluent English
  • Proven experience in data engineering, database development, or data analytics.
  • Strong ability to work with unstructured or semi-structured data.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel; experience with Microsoft Access or similar tools preferred.
  • Experience designing databases or structured data models from scratch.
  • Strong attention to detail and data accuracy.
  • Ability to work independently and manage a short-term project with clear deliverables.
  • Comfortable extracting data from PDFs and disparate source files.
Nice to Have
  • Experience working with financial data, M&A data, or investment-related datasets.
  • Familiarity with benchmarking or comparative analytics.
  • Prior experience supporting private equity, investment, or corporate strategy teams.
