The Role
The Noise and Vibration Performance Engineer at GM Defense has responsibility for the development and integration of components and subsystems into a vehicle to meet the programs desired noise and vibration performance. The GM Defense Noise and Vibration Engineer will become the internal export on customer noise and vibration requirements as well as test procedures (some of which may differ from standard GM requirements and procedures). They will work with their GM Performance Integration and VDDV counterparts to develop tools and adapt standard GM processes to GMD programs as appropriate.
What You'll Do
  • Evaluate vehicles, subsystems, and/or components for noise and vibration performance - both subjective and objectives assessments.
  • Sets up and operates test and data collection devices (sound recording, accelerometers, etc.) and measurement tools to test effects of calibration and hardware changes on noise and vibration. Work is done on test track and/or in specialized test facilities (dynamometers, wind tunnel, shaker rigs, water test chambers and other).
  • Develop technical solutions to noise issues - propose design changes to components and subsystems. Prove solutions work through testing and evaluations of experimental versions. Work with assembly plant or suppliers to implement changes. Evaluate production version of solutions proposed by design groups and/or suppliers.
  • Develop and execute vehicle testing plan to optimize performance while balancing with mass and cost considerations. Plan must meet timing needs defined by program.
  • Work jointly with other vehicle integration areas, SMT, and the Lead Development Engineer to balance vehicle needs - mass, fuel economy, ride and handling, manufacturing, safety, etc.
  • Perform data analysis of measurements (frequency analysis, modal vibration analysis, etc.) LMS, MATLAB, and Head Acoustics are commonly used.
  • Work jointly with analytical engineers to apply math models to guide testing and development. Use test data to correlate models to reality and make them more accurate.
  • Supports assembly plant during vehicle launch to resolve issues with performance of production vehicles.
  • Travels on occasional test trips to other parts of the USA or globally to evaluate performance or support global testing at GM, 3rd party, or customer facilities.
  • This work varies at different phases of the development program as a vehicle is taken from initial concept and planning through prototype development and finally to validation / customer testing and start of production at the assembly plant.

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)
  • Bachelor in Engineering, Technology, Applied Physics, or related technical or science disciplines.
  • 5+ years related job experience - any vehicle performance roles, vehicle test, vehicle calibration or validation experience.
  • Must be flexible and willing to take on assignments outside of core responsibilities - desire to learn new integration areas & support other areas of vehicle development as workload allows.
  • Understanding of the general principles of operation of mechanical/electrical mechanisms.
  • High level analytical ability where problems are unusual and complex.
  • High level of oral/written communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively within teams. Good interpersonal skills - developing vehicles is a team sport.
  • Self-motivated and directed, wants to learn.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills.
  • This position requires a valid driver's license and the ability to legally operate a motor vehicle on a regular basis.
  • Candidate must be a U.S. Person (U.S. citizen, U.S. permanent resident, asylee, or refugee).

What Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)
  • Previous experience as a Noise & Vibration Engineer.
  • Master's degree
  • Understanding of vehicle instrumentation and digital acquisition systems.
  • In-depth knowledge of Truck vehicle integration, Military Ground wheel vehicle knowledge.
  • Experience on military or government projects.

This position requires the ability to legally operate a motor vehicle on a regular basis and successfully complete a Motor Vehicle Report review.
