Hybrid: Position does not require an employee to be on-site full-time, but the general expectation is that the employee be onsite at Concord, NC or at assigned team location at minimum four (4) days each week.
The Role
We are seeking an Applied Vehicle Dynamics Simulation Operations Engineer to strengthen our motorsports program and support the effective use of GM's simulation toolchain within NASCAR race teams. This role focuses on delivering high-value engineering support that translates directly into on-track performance gains through data analysis, data visualization, and simulation-driven insights.
The successful candidate will collaborate with race team personnel and GM engineers to conduct analysis studies using GM's offline simulation tools and Driver-in-Loop (DiL) simulators. Responsibilities include supporting the use and training of DiL and offline tools, gathering and relaying team feedback to GM simulation development groups, refining vehicle model inputs, and applying data from team and GM test rigs to improve simulation correlation. This position plays a key role in advancing vehicle dynamics understanding and enhancing the performance of GM's simulation toolchain.
Success requires strong proficiency in engineering software, proactive collaboration, and a passion for accurate, efficient vehicle dynamics modeling.

What You'll Do
- Serve as a key performance simulation support engineer embedded within a NASCAR Cup Series race team.
- Apply advanced analytics and GM's simulation toolchain to process, interpret, and correlate test and simulation data, delivering insights that enhance performance and modeling accuracy.
- Leverage data analysis tools-including Excel (pivot tables, formulas, charts), SQL (queries, joins, aggregations), Databricks, and Python (data manipulation, statistical analysis, visualization)-to support simulation result analysis.
- Contribute to the development of clear, intuitive data visualizations using tools such as Tableau, Power BI, Looker, or Spotfire.
- Conduct regression analysis, hypothesis testing, and other statistical methods to support engineering decisions.
- Collaborate with the broader simulation support team to refine processes, explore new methodologies, and maximize the value of the simulation toolchain for race team performance.
- Support test plan creation and execution using specialized test equipment, including SPMM/kinematic rigs, 7-post rigs, and push-up/down rigs.
- Provide real-time support during at-track testing as needed, including simulation model updates based on setup changes and driver input.
- Act as a representative of race team needs within the simulation toolchain development process, ensuring tools evolve in alignment with operational requirements.
- Communicate technical findings, results, and recommendations clearly and effectively to GM engineers and race team personnel.
What You'll Need (Required Qualifications)
- Bachelor's degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics, or a related technical discipline.
- Minimum of 3 years of proven experience in vehicle dynamics, simulation-based engineering, or related modeling tools, or applied mathematics performing descriptive and inferential statistical analysis.
- Demonstrated analytical mindset with a customer-focused, structured approach and strong interpersonal skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across teams.
- Team-oriented mindset with flexibility, reliability, and a high level of integrity.
- Strong passion for motorsports paired with a solid understanding of vehicle dynamics engineering.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced, continuously evolving environment while maintaining a strong work ethic and integrity.
- Position may be eligible for relocation assistance.
- Ability to travel to team or GM tests up to 15% of the time.
What Will Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications):
- Experience using Dymola/Modelica within a simulation toolchain.
- Familiarity with modern software development tools and environments, preferably including C# and Git.
- Prior NASCAR race engineering experience with hands-on use of simulation tools.
- Proficiency with motorsports data analysis platforms such as Pi Toolbox, MoTeC i2, or McLaren ATLAS.
- Background in data analysis using tools such as SQL, Excel, Databricks, and Python.
- Experience developing data visualizations with tools like Tableau, Power BI, Looker, or Spotfire.
- Understanding of high-performance vehicle, tire, and aerodynamic modeling methodologies.
- Master's degree in engineering, physics, mathematics, or a related technical field.
- Experience working with Driver-in-the-Loop (DiL) simulators.
