The Modern Workplace Engineer Level I engineer supports Microsoft 365 environments for our Defense Industrial Base customers. This individual is responsible for delivering secure, compliant, and efficient modern workplace experiences using the Microsoft 365 E5 suite.
This role will focus on both the ongoing operations of managed services as well as project-based onboarding and adoption.
Role & Responsibilities:
End User Productivity Support
- Provide Tier I support for Microsoft 365 applications, including:
- Exchange Online
- Microsoft Teams
- SharePoint Online
- OneDrive for Business
- Microsoft Office Apps (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.)
- Escalate support requests as necessary to Level II engineers.
- Troubleshoot issues related to Microsoft 365 access, synchronization, and collaboration.
Identity & Access Support
- Configure and maintain Conditional Access, passwordless authentication, and identity protection policies in Microsoft Entra ID.
- Support hybrid identity scenarios and secure guest access across Microsoft 365 services.
Security & Compliance Tasks
- Assist with reviewing and applying sensitivity labels, retention policies, and data loss prevention (DLP) rules within Microsoft Purview (Compliance Center).
- Monitor alerts in Microsoft Defender for Office 365 and escalate issues per defined procedures.
Service Delivery & Operations
- Respond to service requests and incidents in alignment with SLAs and internal escalation paths.
- Perform basic configuration and policy updates using Microsoft 365 Admin Center and Microsoft Endpoint Manager (Intune). Follow internal processes (such as change controls) for making changes in customer environments.
- Document technical issues, solutions, and recurring patterns in internal knowledge base systems.
Customer Engagement
- Work directly with customer stakeholders, primarily technical contacts, to resolve routine issues and implement M365 changes.
- Participate in onboarding activities for new users, sites, or departments within existing managed customers.
Team Collaboration
- Coordinate with higher-level engineers to escalate complex issues or contribute to larger projects.
- Participate in regular team syncs and ongoing training sessions to stay current on Microsoft 365 features and changes.
- Coordinate with Endpoint Engineering, Security Operations, and Azure Engineering teams to resolve issues.
Competencies / Skills:
- 1–2 years of IT support experience, preferably with a managed service provider (MSP) or in a customer-facing technical role.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft 365 administration portals (Admin Center, Teams Admin Center, Exchange Admin Center).
- Strong troubleshooting skills and attention to detail.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently while following defined processes and procedures administering Exchange Online, SharePoint Online, Exchange Online, Microsoft Teams, Microsoft 365 Apps, sensitivity labels, Microsoft 365 Defender, and Active Directory.
- Familiarity with remote management and monitoring (RMM) tools and patch management tools.
- U.S. Citizenship required (due to work with defense contractors and ITAR-regulated customers).
Preferred
- Experience with Zero Trust implementation principles in Microsoft 365 environments.
- Familiarity with Microsoft Defender for Endpoint and its integration with Defender for Office 365.
- Familiarity with basic security and compliance concepts related to CMMC or NIST 800-171.
- Hands-on experience with Microsoft Purview compliance solutions.
- Experience working in regulated industries or classified environments.
- Microsoft 365 Certified: Fundamentals (MS-900)
- Microsoft 365 Certified: Enterprise Administrator Expert (MS-102)
- Microsoft 365 Certified: Modern Desktop Administrator Associate (MD-102)
- CompTIA Security+ (especially valued for work in DIB environments)
