About the role

Most of Chronosphere’s end users are software developers using our product to understand their distributed systems, their own customers’ experience, and troubleshoot issues. Chronosphere has organized a set of product development teams into the Developer Experience group to invest in improving the developer experience for our customers. As an engineering manager in the developer experience group, you will support engineering for one or two product development teams.

One of the most exciting aspects of this role is you get to lead projects that are directly focused on improving the lives of software engineers exactly like the engineers you will be managing.

You Will

  • Partner with your product manager, UX designer, and engineering leaders to nurture a culture of experimentation that drives disciplined incremental delivery and a roadmap based on customer feedback.

  • Learn our product, the observability market, and what our customers need in an observability solution so that you can contribute to key product, prioritization, and design decisions.

  • Support engineers working as “mini CEOs” who fully own customer and business problems based on strategic guidance from you and your partner in product management.

  • Develop strong feedback loops with stakeholders, including sales, account management, and support teams, to align team output with desired outcomes.

  • Balance work across our individual contributors and help them do their best work by creating a healthy team environment.

  • Support and develop a team of engineers through all stages of their career via feedback, coaching, and performance management.

  • Identify and remove impediments, fostering team efficiency.

  • Be accountable for the reliability and performance of the team’s systems in production, and ensure that your team has the focus, tools, and processes needed to meet our reliability standards.

  • Collaborate with other engineering and product leaders on wider organizational initiatives.

  • Collaborate and partner with sister teams to deliver on shared goals for the company.

How you will start

In your first three months, you will learn about Chronosphere’s platform, the team’s roadmap, our customers, the tech stack, and engineering practices. You will also build relationships across the organization and manage your direct reports, taking on planning and execution. Over time, you will assume more responsibility with support from your manager.

You have

  • Experience partnering with product and design to make key decisions based on a strong knowledge of your customers.

  • Skills in setting up engineers for success on product development teams.

  • Experience coaching and developing software engineers of varied backgrounds and levels.

  • Ability to clarify ambiguous requirements and evolve them into actionable plans, driving team alignment and accountability.

  • Empathy and an understanding of how to support engineers to do their best work.

  • Ability to establish and change processes to empower the team to achieve their goals.

  • A high level of organization and the ability to manage multiple ambitious, concurrent projects from initial concept through delivery and production support.

  • Familiarity with enterprise software and software as a service. We deliver a highly reliable service to demanding business customers, and you should understand how this impacts the way product is built, validated, released, and operated.

  • Strong background in partnering with recruiting, making hiring decisions and closing hires, and building a diverse and inclusive team. We believe strongly that hiring is the responsibility of engineering management, and you should be able to demonstrate attracting, closing, and retaining engineers at multiple levels.
