Job Description:
The Manager of Capacity Engineering is responsible for overseeing the strategic planning and optimization of power, space, and cooling resources across the organization’s data center portfolio. This role leads initiatives in infrastructure capacity forecasting, failover modeling, and risk mitigation to ensure the reliable and efficient utilization of critical facility resources.Acting as a key strategic partner to the Sales organization, this position ensures that all colocation opportunities are assessed with speed, accuracy, and a balanced view of customer needs, revenue potential, and operational resilience. The Manager of Capacity Engineering directs a team focused on delivering data-driven capacity planning, proactive risk assessments, and continuous infrastructure optimization—enabling the organization to scale efficiently and support high-performance, mission-critical environments.
Key Responsibilities and Essential Job Functions:
Capacity Strategy & Optimization:
- Lead the development and refinement of capacity models to track and forecast space, power, and cooling utilization across data center facilities.
- Optimize existing infrastructure footprints to maximize available power, enhance rack density, and improve overall efficiency.
- Identify and implement strategic opportunities to drive resource efficiency and infrastructure scalability across the portfolio.
Failover & Risk Assessment:
- Oversee the execution of failover modeling and risk assessments related to power and cooling systems, ensuring alignment with business continuity standards.
- Manage electrical panel schedules and ensure real-time accuracy in power distribution documentation.
- Partner with DCIM Technology and Operations teams to advance automation, accuracy, and visibility in capacity reporting and monitoring systems.
Pre-Sales & Deployment Planning:
- Collaborate closely with Sales to evaluate colocation opportunities with speed and precision, ensuring technical feasibility and infrastructure alignment.
- Provide rapid and data-driven responses regarding power and space availability while maintaining compliance with operational thresholds and redundancy requirements.
- Act as a strategic advisor during deal structuring, supporting Sales in optimizing configurations to maximize revenue while upholding infrastructure reliability and availability standards.
Team Leadership & Collaboration:
- Directly manage a geographically distributed team of Regional Capacity Engineers (West, Central, East), driving accountability and performance across all regions.
- Work closely with the DCIM Technology Manager to ensure real-time analytics and data insights effectively support capacity planning and decision-making.
- Collaborate with the DCIM Operations Manager to uphold configuration accuracy, audit readiness, and consistent reporting standards across all data center sites.
Required Qualifications:
- Proven in-depth knowledge of data center power distribution, cooling systems, airflow dynamics (CFM), and rack density (WPSF).
- Proven expertise in failover modeling, power chain redundancy, and electrical load balancing for mission-critical environments.
- Demonstrated experience with panel schedule management, BMS/BAS systems, and capacity analytics tools.
- Ability to translate complex infrastructure constraints into actionable business insights and strategic recommendations.
- Extensive experience interpreting and working with electrical engineering documentation, including single-line diagrams, panel schedules, and facility power layouts.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD and Microsoft Visio for space planning, rack layout design, and infrastructure visualization.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in data center infrastructure engineering, capacity planning, or critical facility operations.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to sit for extended periods of time.
- Walk or stand for 25% of the time.
- Moderate or advanced keyboard usage.
- Limited travel may be required.
Base Pay Range: Annualized salary range offered for this position is estimated to be $113,000 - $145,000. However, the actual pay range depends on each candidate’s experience, location, and qualifications.
Variable Pay: Discretionary annual bonus, based on personal and company performance.
