About Us

The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees. Description of Work

The Machinist position supports the Department of Adult Correction’s, Support Services Transportation section by operating machine tools to fabricate, modify, and repair a variety of metal parts to be used for the upfitting/customization of the Moter Fleet Management vehicles used by the agency. The position is responsible for welding, creating and modifying parts made of metal, wood and plastic. The role completes assigned work and serves as Team Lead to staff and inmates.
Key Duties Include:
-Working with the properties of common metals and alloys.
-Utilizing precise measuring scales and the uses of measuring instruments such as vernier, inside and outside calipers, and micrometers.
-Sheet metal operation and fabrication.
-Welding
-Reading and understanding blueprints, technical diagrams, and sketches of complex equipment.

Salary Grade Range: $41,206.00-$72,113.00

Candidates now meet the minimum qualifications of a position if they meet the minimum education and experience listed on the vacancy announcement. The Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)/ Management Preferences are not required. Applicants who possess the following skills are preferred:

  • Working knowledge of the principles and operation of various machine tools such as lathes, drill presses, shapers, milling machines, boring bars, dividing heads and grinders (Must identify five of the seven tools).
  • Demonstrated experience manipulating the properties of metals and alloys.
  • Proven experience performing various welding techniques.
  • Documented experience leading a team

About the Division of Engineering, Construction, and Maintenance (DECM)

The Division of Engineering, Construction, and Maintenance (DECM) coordinates all North Carolina Department of Adult Corrections (NCDAC) construction and renovation efforts, working closely with the State Construction Office to bring projects to life. We represent the department on key property and building matters while keeping facilities running smoothly through expert support for mechanical, electrical, kitchen, and other essential systems. With a dedicated team specializing in design, project management, and sustainability, DECM helps ensure our facilities stay safe, efficient, and ready to serve.

Work Location and Schedule

The work schedule is Monday – Thursday 7:00 AM – 5:30 PM but occasionally could require work hours on Fridays.
