The project
We are seeking an experienced Linux System Administrator to provide system administration services for a hybrid environment of RedHat and Ubuntu Linux virtual machines supporting hydrodynamic modeling, database management, and scientific research operations. The role requires advanced Linux administration skills, expertise with LDAP, PAM, Samba, and experience integrating with Windows Active Directory. Responsibilities also include supporting high-performance computing, troubleshooting hardware/software, managing backups, supporting database and scientific modeling tools, and maintaining secure, efficient operations for ongoing research initiatives. This is a remote contract opportunity, with government-issued equipment and credentials provided upon onboarding.
Job duties include, but are not limited to:
- Install, configure, upgrade, and maintain Linux servers and clients (Ubuntu, Ubuntu Server, RedHat) in both bare-metal and virtualized/cloud environments.
- Enable and optimize remote desktop access between Windows and Ubuntu systems.
- Create and manage user accounts with LDAP/PAM; maintain/troubleshoot LDAP and Samba servers.
- Integrate Linux user management with Windows Active Directory groups.
- Troubleshoot hardware and associated drivers (display, print, etc.).
- Maintain and troubleshoot backup systems and protocols (Symantec, VM-level, DB-specific).
- Support scientific staff with installation, troubleshooting, and maintenance of hydrodynamic/ecological models (e.g., RSM, MySQL database connections, Python/R/Appaserver tools).
- Provide support for compiling and managing libraries for scientific programming (C, C++, Fortran).
- Implement and maintain automated diagnostic and reporting tools.
- Ensure compliance with IT security and government protocols, including timely security patching and participation in required background checks/training.
- Collaborate with government IT personnel for technical guidance and reporting.
- Document processes, provide recommendations for improvements, and respond to system issues as needed.
Compensation and Term
This opportunity is for a contract position with pay commensurate with experience up to $55 per hour.
Qualifications you need
A successful candidate possesses or provides the following:
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field
- Demonstrated experience administering Linux systems (Ubuntu and RedHat), including cloud-based VMs.
- Experience with LDAP/PAM, user account management, and integration with Windows Active Directory.
- Strong troubleshooting skills with networking, hardware, and virtualization environments.
Familiarity with scientific/engineering computing environments and supporting high-performance computing applications. - Experience supporting backup/recovery protocols and tools.
- Proficiency with scripting and automation for diagnostics and maintenance.
- Strong documentation, communication, and collaborative skills.
