We are in the process of staffing up our development team with outstanding talent to tackle a brand new sci-fi remake project using Unreal Engine 5. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who is tired of being a cog in a bigger machine but would rather be directly responsible for establishing the visual style of the final game while working with a lean team.

REPORT STRUCTURE

  • This role reports directly to the Lead Designer while working closely with the Project Lead, Producer, and other Designers.
  • This role is responsible for liaising with narrative designers, level designers, and artists to fulfill the shared vision of the project.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Own the design and implementation of levels and gameplay moments, from initial concept and blockout to final polish.
  • Contribute to the development of level design best practices and pipelines from the greyboxing phase to final implementation.
  • Detail levels with lighting and decorations for clear spatial readability and environmental storytelling.
  • Work with Environment Artists to ensure levels are both visually compelling and mechanically functional.
  • Collaborate with other designers and Narrative department to align level design with systemic gameplay, narrative beats, and worldbuilding.
  • Develop and maintain clear documentation for level flow and layouts, encounters and scripted events, and general system design specs.
  • Collaborate with other team members and provide timely and constructive criticism to submissions from colleagues.
  • Self-motivated and highly adaptable to new workflows and processes while willing to learn new skills and insert themselves into gaps within the team structure. We are looking for that “Indie dev” mindset.
  • Respond well to feedback and constructive criticism to your submissions and workflows and willingness to iterate on assets.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ego-free, highly motivated, action-oriented, curious learn-it-all with a growth mindset
  • Comfort operating in ambiguous and unregimented environments
  • Experience with working in Unreal Engine utilizing Blueprints and its built in level design tools, or equivalent experience in similar engines and toolsets.
  • Shipped at least 1 AA+ 
  • Demonstrative strength in level design, with a strong portfolio of past work.
  • Solid understanding of gameplay systems, player progression, and combat and encounters.
  • Experience building custom tools in Unreal Engine.
  • Eager to take ownership over features and systems and see them through to completion.
  • Likes Sci-Fi and Horror media.

We are on the lookout for individuals who are highly self-accountable. As this is a smaller team, there won’t be a lot of hand-holding as production begins to ramp up. If this kind of challenge excites you, we invite you to apply!
