About the Role
Product plays a pivotal role at The Athletic, spearheading critical cross-functional initiatives and leading teams of engineers, designers, marketers, and analysts to execute seamlessly on behalf of the business and our users. As a Lead Product Manager, you will lend your domain and functional expertise to a wide range of business and Product areas that collectively require multidisciplinary skills. You will tackle highly complex issues that require cross-functional strategic, operational, and technical alignment. This is an advanced individual contributor role, and you will be critical to the success of the Product organization.
This role is 100% remote for candidates currently residing in either the United States or Canada.
Focus of The Role
Your primary focus is to deliver impactful consumer-facing features, experiences and experiments across Web, iOS, and Android platforms that help deepen our readers engagement with The Athletic.
Key areas of focus include:
- Developing features that showcase the depth of our coverage and drive engagement with our content across articles, newsletters, scores and stats, highlights, podcasts, and more.
- Creating compelling user experiences that makes users more likely to engage with our content and develop loyalty to the brand over time.
- Developing a personalization approach so that all types of sports fans can find the experience and content that suits them (e.g. general sports fans should be served equally well to a die hard fan that wants deep reporting on a set number of teams).
To succeed, you will need to:
- Understand sports fans' behaviors, needs, and motivations through both qualitative and quantitative insights.
- Partner with newsroom leaders to translate editorial strategy into product experiences.
- Work closely with engineers and designers to deliver high-quality features that drive our key metrics.
- Balance short-term wins with longer-term strategic initiatives.
- Make data-driven decisions that improve our audience engagement metrics.
Responsibilities
Own the strategy and roadmap for priority consumer experiences
- Define the strategy for your product area(s) to meet business objectives.
- Develop and manage a roadmap that balances immediate user needs with longer-term strategic goals in the service of a cohesive experience across all touchpoints in the fan’s journey.
- Articulate the "why" behind product strategy to gain and maintain alignment across stakeholders.

- Champion features that drive our north star metrics.
- Build and lead cross-functional teams that ship with quality and velocity.

- Transform user feedback and data insights into product enhancements.

Requirements
- 4+ years of highly relevant product management experience at a fast-growing consumer company or demonstrated success in a similar role.
- Strong strategic thinking with the ability to translate business goals into product features.
- Expertise in consumer digital products.
- A bias toward action and the ability to rally teams to deliver results - you need to get things done.
- Excellence with data - analyzing data, deriving insights, and making data-driven decisions.
- Experience with A/B testing as a tool to rigorously deliver impact.
- Excellent collaboration skills and ability to influence a team and drive alignment with stakeholders.
- Empathy for users that translates into intuitive, delightful experiences.
- Eagerness to try new things and learn - and a willingness to fail.
The annual base salary range for this role is $145,000.00 - $175,000.00 USD. The total compensation offered for this position may vary based on factors such as education, experience, skills, and location. It may also include non-cash rewards and benefits. The base salary range is subject to change and may be modified in the future.
