Job Title: Lead Mechanical Design Engineer

Department: Engineering

Accountability: This position reports to the General Manager

Scribner designs and manufactures electrochemical test and measurement systems for fuel cell, electrolyzer, membrane, flow chemistry, and battery research worldwide. The Lead Mechanical Engineer is the technical owner of the mechanical discipline at Scribner, holding design authority over the mechanical architecture of all product lines and carrying primary responsibility for the mechanical design for new and legacy products.

This is a senior role both as an individual contributor, project management, and people management. The Lead Mechanical Engineer may have direct reports and participate in hiring. The technical authority for this role includes setting mechanical design standards, approving mechanical designs for release, and representing the discipline in cross-functional design reviews and customer-facing technical discussions.

Responsibilities: 

  • Design components, assemblies, and complete system architectures in SolidWorks to meet functional, structural, thermal, and fluidic requirements, including design for manufacturability, assembly, and compliance certification
  • Leverage requirements-based design for new and legacy projects by collaborating with Science, Operations, and Management
  • Lead technical design assessments and project management reviews to ensure products meet requirements and support program schedule
  • Prepare component and assembly detail drawings for release to production and for supplier quotation
  • Conduct hazard and risk assessments for mechanical aspects of new product development, continuous improvement projects, and operations
  • Own parts lists/BOMs, assembly drawings, system configuration, process flow diagrams, and work instructions collaboratively with Operations
  • Own mechanical engineering data within ERP system and document vault
  • Provide hands-on technical support to operations, sales and marketing, and science teams including build support, testing and troubleshooting, technical manuals, spec sheets, and first-article review
  • Review and validate standard costs for mechanical items and assemblies in coordination with operations and finance
  • Conduct continuous improvement reviews and sustaining engineering initiatives
  • Assist with data-driven approach to problem solving/root cause analysis
  • Mentor engineers and technicians on CAD practice, tolerancing, design for manufacture, and Scribner design standards
  • Participate in interviews and technical evaluation of engineering candidates
  • Contribute to product roadmap definition, development schedules, and effort estimates
  • Support company technical initiatives 

Requirements

  • BSE-Mechanical Engineering, Associates Degree, or equivalent experience
  • Self-starter with 3-7 years of design engineering experience in a solid modeling-based CAD system (SolidWorks is a plus)
  • Experience with compliance and certification including CAN/UL/EN 61010 and other applicable standards
  • Experience in new product development and root cause analysis
  • Knowledge of GD&T (geometric dimensioning & tolerancing), DFM (design for manufacturability), and DFA (design for assembly)
  • Comfortable with hands on prototyping, empirical testing, rapid iterations, and requirement validation
  • Experience and/or knowledge of the following design fields; electromechanical integration, sheet metal & chassis construction, precision machining, tubing & connections, process control, and thermal & fluid management
  • Experience and/or knowledge of ERP systems (Business Central is a plus)
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.) on a Windows-based OS
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to execute in a timeline-driven multi-task environment
  • Strong mechanical/hand tool skills desired
  • Corrected 20/20 vision
  • Full-time on-premises position
