Rycon Construction is an employee-owned company (ESOP) that provides construction management, general contracting, design-build, and program management services nationwide. An ENR Top 400 Contractor, ENR Top 100 Green Contractor, and BD+C Top 150 Contractor with nine offices, Rycon specializes in new construction, renovations, and adaptive reuse projects. We have an in-house Architectural Finishes & Specialty Fabrication Division that ships/installs nationally.  


Rycon is seeking an experienced Director of Business Development at our Charlotte office.

What You Will Do:

  • Develop and execute the overall business development strategy for the Charlotte market, aligning growth initiatives with Rycon's long-term business objectives.
  • Identify, evaluate, and pursue high-value opportunities across multiple construction sectors, including healthcare, higher education, industrial, hospitality, multifamily, and commercial markets.
  • Build, maintain, and strengthen executive-level relationships with owners, developers, architects, engineers, consultants, and key industry influencers.
  • Serve as a trusted advisor and ambassador for Rycon, leading client engagement efforts from initial relationship development through project award.
  • Lead strategic pursuit planning, including capture planning, pre-positioning activities, client outreach, presentations, and proposal strategies.
  • Partner with executive leadership to establish market priorities and identify emerging trends, opportunities, and competitive advantages.
  • Drive market intelligence initiatives by analyzing industry trends, competitor activity, economic indicators, and client needs.
  • Lead Go/No-Go evaluations and provide strategic recommendations regarding pursuit opportunities, risk assessments, and resource allocation.
  • Oversee and maintain CRM systems, ensuring accurate reporting, forecasting, pipeline management, and opportunity tracking.
  • Represent Rycon at industry organizations, trade associations, networking events, community functions, and client engagements.
  • Collaborate with operations, preconstruction, and project teams to identify opportunities for repeat business, client expansion, and strategic growth.
  • Develop and implement targeted marketing and branding initiatives that strengthen Rycon's presence and visibility throughout key markets.
  • Establish annual business development goals, performance metrics, and growth strategies for the region.

Secondary Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Lead, mentor, and develop business development team members, fostering a culture of accountability, collaboration, and professional growth.
  • Work closely with senior leadership to develop and execute regional growth plans and strategic initiatives.
  • Support preconstruction and estimating teams by facilitating introductions to prospective clients, design partners, and key stakeholders.
  • Develop strategic partnerships with architects, engineers, developers, subcontractors, and professional organizations.
  • Provide regular market updates, pipeline reviews, and strategic recommendations to executive leadership.
  • Lead client presentations, industry panels, speaking engagements, and educational sessions that position Rycon as a market leader.
  • Assist with recruitment and development of future business development talent as the team continues to grow.

What You Will Need to Be Successful:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Business, Marketing, Construction Management, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Minimum of ten (10) years of progressive business development experience within the construction industry, including leadership responsibilities.
  • Proven track record of developing client relationships and successfully securing large-scale commercial construction projects.
  • Demonstrated success developing and executing strategic growth plans and market expansion initiatives.
  • Strong existing network of relationships within the Gastonia construction market.
  • Experience working with executive leadership on strategic planning, business forecasting, and revenue growth initiatives.
  • Exceptional verbal, written, and presentation skills with the ability to engage executive-level audiences.
  • Strong negotiation, relationship-building, and influencing skills.
  • Proficiency with CRM platforms, Microsoft Office Suite, and business development reporting tools.
  • Highly strategic thinker with strong business acumen and market awareness.
  • Self-motivated leader capable of driving results independently while collaborating across multiple departments.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills with the ability to oversee multiple pursuits simultaneously.

Additional Attributes Preferred:

  • Established network of owners, developers, architects, engineers, and industry leaders within healthcare, higher education, industrial, hospitality, and commercial markets.
  • Active participation and leadership within industry associations and community organizations.
  • Experience building and managing high-performing business development teams.
  • Experience presenting growth strategies, pipeline forecasts, and market analysis to executive leadership and ownership groups.
  • Demonstrated history of successfully opening new markets, expanding geographic reach, or developing new client relationships that resulted in measurable revenue growth.
  • Strong understanding of the preconstruction, estimating, and construction delivery processes.
