The pediatric hospitalist APP provides services caring for acute and chronically ill hospitalized patients. The schedule includes weekdays, weekends, and holidays. The APP maintains infection control/safety standards and is committed to providing and promoting patient-centered communication and care.
This position is for a 12-hour shift, from 9am-9pm. This position will be a unique position for our team. The APP will start the day in the term newborn nursery seeing admissions, rounding on babies, and discharging babies. The APP will assist the pediatric hospitalist team the CHIPS team, in the later part of the afternoon and evening providing cross-cover and admissions. Due to the variability in the shift, it is imperative the APP is able to adapt and flex to the needs of the teams and demonstrate initiative and self-motivation.
Essential Functions
- Performs initial and periodic medical history, physical examinations, and daily assessments.
- Records findings of examinations, assessments, and plan of care.
- Performs procedures - required to obtain and maintain lumbar puncture privileges.
- Writes appropriate for appropriate medications during admission and prescriptions upon discharge, if needed.
- Orders and interprets laboratory and radiology examinations.
- Determines treatment plan for patients.
- Documents all patient encounters, records observations, interventions, and actions in a medically appropriate manner on the patient's medical record.
- Serves as a role model/clinical resource in all aspects of job performance and human relations skills.
- Opportunities to assist in the review and development of clinical and operational policies and procedures in the specialty of practice.
Physical Requirements
Work requires walking, standing, sitting, lifting, reaching, bending, stooping, pushing and pulling. Must be able to lift and support the weight of 35 pounds in handling patients, medical equipment, and supplies. Must speak English fluently and in understandable terms. Must possess intact sense of sight, hearing, smell, touch, and finger dexterity. Must have the ability to react and perform in stressful situations.
Education, Experience and Certifications
Must have or be eligible for a DEA license. Approved to practice as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant in the state of North Carolina and has prescriptive authority application through the Board of Nursing or Medical Board. BLS for Healthcare Provider and PALS from AHA is required with an expiration date greater than 90 days from date of beginning practice. NRP from AAP required with an expiration date greater than 90 days from date of beginning practice. Demonstrates appropriate critical thinking, interpersonal skills, and the ability to prioritize and concentrate.
Nurse Practitioner:
Master’s degree or Doctorate of Nursing Practice required. License to practice as a Registered Nurse is required. Certification in the area of practice from a nationally recognized certifying body is required. The nurse practitioner must have ACNP, CPNP-AC, or PNP-AC board certification required based on the population served (non-acute care certified NPs are not eligible for this position).
Physician Assistant:
Graduate from an accredited Physician Assistant program is required. Certification from the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants preferred.
