About the Company

The mining industry has steadily become worse at finding new ore deposits, requiring >10X more capital to make discoveries compared to 30 years ago. The easy-to-find, near-surface deposits have largely been found, and the industry has chronically under-invested in new exploration technology, relying on the manual techniques of yesteryear – even as demand accelerates for copper, lithium, and other metals to build electric vehicles, renewable energy, and data centers.

KoBold builds AI models for mineral exploration and deploys those models—alongside our novel sensors—to guide decisions on KoBold-owned-and-operated exploration programs. In the six years since founding, KoBold has become by far both the largest independent mineral exploration company and the largest exploration technology developer. Our data scientists and software engineers, who come from leading technology companies, jointly lead exploration programs with our renowned exploration geologists.

KoBold has proven its first discovery with materially less capital than the industry average and found one of the best copper deposits ever discovered: the copper is far more concentrated than the global average of copper mines, and this asset alone is expected to generate meaningful revenue for decades. KoBold has a portfolio of more than 60 other projects, each of which has the potential for another high-quality discovery.

KoBold is privately held; investors include institutional asset managers T. Rowe Price and Canada Pension Plan Investments; technology venture capitalists Andreessen Horowitz, Breakthrough Energy Ventures, BOND Capital, Durable Capital, StepStone, and Standard Investments; and natural resources companies Equinor, BHP, and Mitsubishi.

About the Role

This role is a key leader within KoBold's global accounting organization as the company continues to expand its international footprint. You will oversee accounting for KoBold's foreign subsidiaries, help build out accounting operations in new jurisdictions, and lead efforts to scale and automate our international accounting function. As KoBold continues to grow, this role will evolve accordingly—offering opportunities to take on new projects and help build scalable accounting processes for a fast-growing startup.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee accounting staff responsible for KoBold's international entities, including their day-to-day work, priorities, and professional development
  • Review full-cycle accounting for multiple foreign subsidiaries across multiple jurisdictions, including journal entries, account reconciliations, and month-end close deliverables prepared by accounting staff. This will include being responsible for the full-cycle accounting from a subset of subsidiaries in the beginning to learn the processes and systems
  • Help establish and maintain accounting infrastructure for new jurisdictions, including local reporting processes, banking and operating account setup, and integration with corporate systems
  • Review statutory reporting and ensure compliance with local accounting rules in multiple jurisdictions
  • Prepare quarterly consolidated variance analysis
  • Review reporting to joint venture partners and ensure accurate reporting of joint venture expenditures in alignment with JV agreements
  • Oversee support to field exploration teams, including project and budget reports and analysis of fieldwork expenses
  • Oversee the accounts payable workflow and vendor compliance for multiple entities
  • Support transfer pricing by reviewing corporate allocations and by providing data and documentation to the team preparing transfer pricing analyses
  • Support tax compliance by overseeing information flow and documentation for global tax filings, indirect tax filings, annual corporate reporting, and other reporting requirements in multiple countries
  • Identify areas where accounting and operational processes could be automated, propose solutions (including AI agents and integrations across accounting software platforms), and help implement those solutions to streamline processes and create efficiencies
  • Oversee information flow and documentation for statutory and other audits
  • Handle sensitive information in a confidential manner
  • Provide support for miscellaneous projects in accounting and operations

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting with at least 8 years of experience in accounting, including prior experience reviewing the work of and/or managing other accounting staff
  • Experience working with international operations and multi-entity, multi-currency accounting
  • Experience with NetSuite or similar accounting software
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and a proactive communication style
  • The ability to quickly learn new tools and technology as needed and solve new problems continuously
  • Interest in learning about mineral exploration and being a close partner to the exploration project teams
  • A high degree of independence and the ability to work effectively with limited supervision
  • Flexibility to accommodate meetings with staff/vendors overseas
  • Interest in contributing broadly to the success of the company and eager to pitch in where needed

Helpful but not required:

  • Experience with joint ventures in exploration/mining
  • Experience establishing accounting operations in new jurisdictions
  • Experience implementing new systems and process automation
  • Experience with technology or natural resource companies
