Job Overview:
A pioneer in science and math education, ExploreLearning is continuing to pioneer the way in next generation learning technologies and tools for teachers and students. Our captivating supplemental K-12 science and math interactive simulations engage all students in rigorous learning and inspire them to think deeply and creatively. Today, ExploreLearning serves millions of students in all 50 states.
If you’re ready to create innovative interactive simulations like our flagship Gizmos, then please apply. We are seeking someone to establish a vision for advances in our simulation library, leveraging new approaches and technologies where they promise to offer expanded value to our products and consequently, our customers. We seek talented mathematical modelers with a passion for K-12 education to envision creative new solutions and who have enough software development skills to code those solutions. As an Interactive Simulation Designer/Developer you will build, test, and improve these new Gizmos and related products.

It is highly encouraged to include a portfolio of your interactive simulation work.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Conceptualize new interactive simulations for hard-to-learn concepts as aligned with state and national science standards
  • Establish and drive ongoing improvements to our simulations leveraging new techniques where appropriate
  • Write working code including the underpinning mathematical models for new interactive simulations
  • Play a critical role in playtesting and other LX/UX Research activities
  • Work in sprints with a project manager and developer team to build out the simulations for release
  • Build reusable code and libraries for future use
  • Participate in market research and strategic planning including staying well informed enough about the competitive landscape to innovate ahead of it
  • Identify and execute against opportunities to take bold steps forward to advance the utility of interactive simulations in classrooms. This could run the gamut from AI powered approaches that allow simulations to adapt to individual students’ unique learning trajectories to “serious games” approaches that make simulation-based learning more engaging and fun.
  • The ideal candidate for this role will have proven experience and passion for working on creative educational projects that have required an entrepreneurial and innovative mindset to launch and a high level of attention to detail and strong problem-solving to shepherd to a successful outcome.

Job Requirements:

  • Experience with mathematical modeling of a wide range of systems and phenomena
  • 4+ years of experience with application-level JavaScript, HTML5, and Canvas
  • Production experience with JavaScript libraries that help with developing interactive simulations (e.g. PixiJS, Adobe Animate CC) and support data visualization (e.g. d3 or similar/equivalent library)
  • Good sense of design, layout, and presentation.
  • Knowledge of functional programming and object-oriented programming paradigms
  • Ability to write efficient, secure, well-documented, and clean JavaScript code
  • A bachelors degree in CS, EE, mathematics, or related field with an emphasis on mathematical modeling
  • Demonstrated knowledge or experience in applied mathematics
  • Demonstrated knowledge or experience of coding math models and/or simulations
  • Confidence and collaborative skills to work in an agile environment
  • Have previously completed a software project with a team of developers and designers
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Motivated to create superior K-12 educational software
  • Ability to work remotely and autonomously under minimal supervision

Preferred Qualifications include:

  • Prior experience working on creating new products in EdTech and familiarity with meeting the needs of K-12 students and teachers as end users
  • Experience with Learning design and/or learning experience design
  • Experience with K-12 science or math teaching
  • Strong science and/or math disciplinary content, in particular the mathematical modeling of systems and phenomena
  • Track record of designing and building engaging learning technologies
  • Experience with jQuery, Vue, and Github is a plus
