📍Location: Remote or Hybrid (SF or NYC)

Over the past year, we rebuilt ReadMe’s core on top of Git, literally. We migrated away from Mongo and introduced a Git-backed storage system we call Gitto (yes, we named it). Built on EFS and accessed via a network of VMs, Gitto gives us real Git commits for every change, native branching and merging, and bidirectional GitHub sync. It’s not just integration, it’s infrastructure.

This is a foundational shift in how ReadMe operates, and now we need someone to own and evolve the infrastructure powering Gitto and beyond. If you’ve ever wondered what it would be like to build the backend for something like GitHub… you’ll find out here.

You’ll also manage a 2-person infrastructure / devops team responsible for making sure our site is fast, stable, and scales beautifully, while also empowering our developers with the tools they need to build their best work. If you're looking for a player-coach role where you can lead a team and still write code, this is the role for you!

We're a small team of humans (and one owl ) working together to shape the developer landscape through documentation—and we’re growing! That’s where you come in.

🦉 Who we are

ReadMe helps companies build beautiful, personalized, and interactive developer hubs. If you’ve ever visited the developer docs for Apple or Notion, you’ve used ReadMe! We love what we do because it’s so much more than just docs. We’re providing tools for teams to create and manage beautiful documentation with ease. You can read more about what it’s like to work at ReadMe on our careers page.

We've written on our blog in the past about how we interview, and feel free to browse our other blog posts as well if it strikes your fancy!

✅ What you'll do here
  • Lead the team that designs and builds infrastructure systems, with a special focus on Gitto—our Git-based storage layer.

  • Operate and optimize large-scale data systems using AWS services like EC2, EFS, and Load Balancing.

  • Design systems that handle branching, merging, and history tracking across diverse content types (MDX, OAS files, reusable content, etc.).

  • Improve the deploy pipeline, observability stack, and internal tooling, including Deploybert, our custom deployment system.

  • Ensure security, backups, and scaling strategies are in place for a growing volume of Git repos.

  • Help us evolve Gitto’s architecture, turning Git plumbing into a high-performance, reliable backend for both UI and CLI users.

  • Support infrastructure efforts toward SOC II compliance and other best practices in security and reliability.

💙 You'll love this job if you are...
  • A player-coach manager who has developed production infrastructure at scale, ideally with a background in Node.js.

  • Comfortable designing and working with Git as a backend architecture—understanding how bare repos, trees, and commits actually work under the hood.

  • Interested in building for scale, performance, and clarity—both in infrastructure and team practices.

  • Familiar with infrastructure-as-code tools (like Terraform), cloud platforms (especially AWS and EFS), and how to manage distributed file systems.

  • A strong advocate for clean, maintainable code and thoughtful development practices.

  • Passionate about developer experience, including the internal tools and processes engineers rely on to ship great work.

🌱 How you'll grow within one month
  • Get to know our Git-first backend system and infrastructure stack, including libgit2, EC2, and EFS.

  • Contribute to improvements in our deploy pipeline or observability tooling.

  • Participate in planning for upcoming infrastructure-related features.

  🪴 Within a few months, you'll...
  • Help evolve our infrastructure to better support the Git-based model—like syncing, diffing, and caching strategies that scale.

  • Begin proposing long-term improvements to how our infrastructure handles scaling and content branching.

  • Start refining our engineering practices by contributing to internal documentation and tools.

🌳 Within your first year, you'll...
  • Lead technical initiatives that improve Git repo integrity, history tracking, and performance under heavy load.

  • Build and own infrastructure systems that unlock new feature development—while keeping ReadMe fast, secure, and reliable.

  • Mentor engineers on Git’s lower-level architecture and how we leverage it to avoid complexity and redundancy in our platform.

  • Set the long-term direction for how infrastructure enables ReadMe’s vision: documentation that is interactive, flexible, and developer-first.

🛣️ What’s the hiring process like?
  1. We can’t wait to read your resume and (hopefully personality-filled) cover letter! Let us know what excites you about Infrastructure Engineering, and help us get to know you better!

  2. If we think we might be a good fit for you, we’ll set up a 30 minute phone chat with Greg, our CEO and Founder! He’ll tell you more about the role, and get a chance to hear about your experiences.

  3. We’ll then do a technical discussion with a couple of ReadMe’s engineers.

  4. Then we’ll invite you to an "onsite" interview conducted over Zoom! These usually take 3.5 to 5 hours including an hour break in between. We are able to be flexible with the schedule and split it up over two days if that works best for you! We start with a 15-minute get-to-know-you so you can meet the people you’ll be working with, and then have you talk with people one-on-one later on.

  5. We’ll let you know how things went within a week! If it still seems like a good fit all around, we’ll extend you an offer! If not, we will update you to let you know so you aren’t left hanging.

✨ Our benefits include…
  • Unlimited PTO with a three-week minimum. 🏝

  • Fully covered medical, dental, and vision insurance for you, and your dependents. 🩺

  • A One Medical membership. 🧑‍⚕️

  • A wellness stipend for therapy of up to $350 per month for up to 6 months. 😌

  • A wellness stipend of up to $150 per month. 🏋️

  • One-to-one donation matching of up to $1,000 per year. 💸

  • Twelve weeks of paid parental leave after the birth or adoption of a child. 🐣

  • Work from home office stipend of $500. 🖥️

  • Three offsite retreats per year to get together with coworkers and plan for the quarter ahead. ✈️

  • Take a look at our handbook for more information on our benefits! 📘

At ReadMe, we’re committed to cultivating a diverse and inclusive workplace. We welcome people of all backgrounds, experiences, abilities, and perspectives. We are an equal opportunity employer and a pleasant and supportive place to work. We'd love to have you come join us here! ReadMe is open to hiring folks fully remote in the US, hybrid, or in-person at our San Francisco or NYC offices.
