The Opportunity
As a HR Payroll Administration Specialist, you will work in a fast paced, cross-functional, and collaborative environment. You will be responsible for managing MassMutal's multi-state Payroll process according to a pre-established pay schedule, including unplanned off-cycle payrolls. You will ensure the General Ledger payroll accounting is posted and balanced according to financial reporting practices. You will provide one-on-one consultation to employees and ensure that complex payroll matters are escalated and resolved appropriately. You will support cross-functional strategic initiatives and will be self-directed to focus on the employee experience and continuous improvement.
The Team
The Administration & Payroll team is responsible for Payroll Processing, Benefits Administration, Leave Administration, Payroll Tax Reporting, and Organizational Management. The team focuses on inclusivity; using collaboration to meet the needs of our employees, managers, and retirees. This team demonstrates agility and resiliency to manage employee interactions with a sense of urgency and confidentiality. The team is adaptable to an ever-changing environment and is able to quickly shift focus cross-functionally as priorities change. Accountability for driving solutions leveraging appropriate resources within and outside of the team is very important. Additionally, as this is a small team; accountability and team support are crucial to ensure we have trained backup support on all processes.

The Impact:
- Manage MassMutual's multi-state payroll process, ensuring timely and accurate pay results.
- Prepare and audit payroll transactions such as, but not limited to, wage garnishments, tax withholding information, deductions, pay calculations, off-cycle requests, retroactive transactions, prior to processing each payroll cycle while ensuring compliance with Federal, State, and Local regulations for multi-state payrolls.
- Assist with the design of system implementations, testing, and upgrades, as needed, while staying current with Workday functionality.
- Participate in internal control testing and compliance as well as interact with auditors for the purpose of providing supporting documentation and/or information on internal process that is required for audit.
- Investigate and resolve employee payroll related issues and inquiries.
- Resolve escalations, by providing root cause analysis and corrective action for all complex or non-routine situations for all levels of employees and management.
- Evaluate, revise, and continuously improve processes, procedures, and tools to enhance the customer experience.
- Participate in cross-functional strategic initiatives across the organization.
- Cross-train cross-functionally to provide back up support across the team during absences.
The Minimum Qualifications
- 5+ years of insourced Payroll experience.
- 5+ years of multi-state Payroll experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working in a hands-on payroll environment with knowledge of payroll practices.
- Experience with Workday is strongly preferred.
- In-depth knowledge of US payroll tax regulations and reporting requirements, including current federal and multi-state payroll tax experience.
- Knowledgeable on compliance with federal, state, and local payroll, wage, and hour laws and best practices.
- Strong experience in development of efficiencies in payroll processes, directing changes and internal controls.
- Strong attention to detail.
- Ability to prioritize tasks/responsibilities, meet deadlines, and thrive under the pressure of time constraints in a fast-paced environment.
- Proactive, assertive, strong analytical and creative problem-solving skills.
- Strong understanding of Payroll accounting principles.
- Actively participates in industry and brings insights into MassMutual.
