The Head of Detection & Response (DnR) is a senior security engineering leader accountable for Atlassian's global incident detection, response, threat intelligence, and security operations programs. This role drives strategy, execution, and measurable outcomes across cloud-first environments, enabling Atlassian to prevent, detect, and respond to threats at scale while building customer trust.
Compensation
At Atlassian, we strive to design equitable, explainable, and competitive compensation programs. To support this goal, the baseline of our range is higher than that of the typical market range, but in turn we expect to hire most candidates near this baseline. Base pay within the range is ultimately determined by a candidate's skills, expertise, or experience. In the United States, we have three geographic pay zones. For this role, our current base pay ranges for new hires in each zone are:
Zone A: $252,100 - $336,200
Zone B: $226,900 - $302,600
Zone C: $209,300 - $279,000
This role may also be eligible for benefits, bonuses, commissions, and equity.

In this role, you'll get to...
- Define and execute a multi-year DnR strategy aligning to Atlassian's Trust, cloud platform, and AI-driven priorities.
- Achieve measurable uplift in time-to-detect (MTTD), time-to-contain (MTTC), and time-to-recover (MTTR) with reliability targets and SLOs.
- Operationalize modern detections, automated response, and threat intel fusion for products, platform, and corporate ecosystems.
- Work closely with product development teams to embed security best practices and considerations across the entire development lifecycle, ensuring that new features meet the highest trust standards
- Oversee the evolution of our SOC, implementing cutting-edge technologies and refining processes to ensure the highest level of security monitoring and incident detection
- Establish and lead a threat intelligence program, providing valuable insights into the evolving threat landscape and enabling proactive security measures
- 15+ years in security with7+ years leading multi-region detection/response or SOC/IR organizations at large-scale cloud-first companies.
- Proven success running high-severity incidents end to end, including executive and customer communications and regulatory readiness.
- Depth in cloud platforms, identity, modern endpoint/EDR, data security, CI/CD security, and SaaS telemetry integration.
- Track record deploying automation (SOAR) and measurable improvements in MTTD/MTTR with quality KPIs and SLOs.
- Familiarity with privacy-by-design, secure AI usage, and evaluation frameworks for ML/LLM detection use cases.
- Executive presence with board-level communication experience; ability to simplify complex incidents into actionable decisions.
