The Graphics Data Reporter will analyze data, produce charts, and publish articles related to sports analytics. You’ll collaborate with teams to create visual and written content and engage in interactive projects.

About the Role
The Athletic is looking for a versatile reporter to join its Data and Visuals team. This is a generalist position in which your work could vary by the day or week. Some days you may be publishing articles and charts about analytics, sports strategy, trade values, the salary cap or sports analytics. Others you may need to find or analyze data in partnership with another reporter or editor. You may develop and publish charts, tables or other visual explanations, alongside more straightforward writing and reporting. And you may pitch in on tasks of all kinds on large interactive projects, from The Beast to our NFL Playoff tools — and applications we have yet to imagine or create.
This is 100% remote for candidates based in the United States or Canada. Ability to work in a hybrid schedule out of the New York City office is highly preferred.
Responsibilities
- Conceiving of creative and distinct story ideas.
- Collaborating with other members of the Visuals desk and colleagues from around The Athletic.
- Producing work in a range of forms, from written stories to charts to other visual forms.
- Data analysis in a variety of forms.
- A range of interactive development, from light chart production to developing interactive applications.
- Adhering to The Athletic’s editorial standards.
Requirements
- Experience publishing explanatory journalism across a range of subjects.
- Demonstrated experience in using data, technology and visuals for clear, effective explanation.Experience working in a news organization.
- Proven track record of collaboration — someone excited about working with other people.Ability to be well organized and highly skilled in reporting and writing in a variety of story forms.
- Experience approaching the news creatively.
- An interest in and ability to learn technological skills.
- Experience working with and analyzing data, in Excel, R, Python or other tools preferred.
- Experience producing publication-grade charts and visuals, in Adobe Illustrator, Figma or in the browser preferred.
- Experience producing interactive journalism using modern programming frameworks like Svelte preferred.
The annual base salary range for this role is $110,000.00 - $140,000.00 USD. The total compensation offered for this position may vary based on factors such as education, experience, skills, and location.
For roles in the U.S., dependent on your role, you may be eligible for variable pay, such as an annual bonus and restricted stock.
