We are Walker & Dunlop.  We are one of the largest providers of capital to the commercial real estate industry, enabling real estate owners and operators to bring their visions of communities — where people live, work, shop, and play — to life. We are committed to creating meaningful social, environmental, and economic change in our communities.

Department Overview

WDTech is W&D’s in-house technology team – a group of collaborative and highly skilled technology professionals, all of whom are leading experts in real estate data, data science, and technology.

WDTech Engineering builds solutions that impact not only our products but also the people and processes across our organization. A commitment to innovation and a passion for disrupting the old-fashioned real estate industry are our highest priorities.

The Impact You Will Have

As an Engineering Manager, you will lead a cross-functional software engineering team responsible for designing, building, and delivering scalable applications and platform capabilities. This role combines technical leadership, people management, and hands-on collaboration to support the delivery of high-quality software solutions aligned with product and business priorities.

Working closely with Product Managers, Engineers, Data teams, and cross-functional stakeholders, you will help guide technical strategy, support team development, and drive execution across the software development lifecycle.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Lead and develop a cross-functional team of Frontend, Backend/API, and Quality Assurance engineers.

  • Partner with Product Managers to translate product requirements into technical solutions, delivery plans, and engineering priorities.

  • Participate in the full software development lifecycle, including planning, architecture, development, testing, deployment, and ongoing iteration.

  • Provide technical leadership and architectural guidance across backend services, APIs, and application development.

  • Support the design, development, and maintenance of backend systems and data workflows using technologies such as Python, Airflow, PostgreSQL, and Kafka.

  • Collaborate with Product, Data Engineering, and Data Science teams to support data-driven application experiences.

  • Promote engineering best practices related to code quality, testing, monitoring, scalability, and technical documentation.

  • Manage technical debt, support continuous improvement initiatives, and contribute to long-term platform stability and scalability.

  • Partner with other Engineering Managers on cross-team engineering initiatives and shared platform standards.

  • Mentor and support engineers through coaching, feedback, and career development.

  • Perform other duties as assigned

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred, preferably in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.

  • 6+ years of software engineering experience, including 2+ years of engineering leadership or people management experience.

  • Experience developing APIs and distributed applications using modern backend technologies and service-oriented architectures

  • Strong experience with Python and modern backend development frameworks.

  • Experience with cloud platforms such as Amazon Web Services (AWS), event-driven architectures, and scalable web applications.

  • Experience leading Agile software development teams and collaborating cross-functionally with Product and Data teams.

  • Experience with mapping and geospatial technologies such as Mapbox preferred.

  • Real estate, financial services, or related industry experience preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Strong understanding of modern software engineering principles, application architecture, and web development fundamentals.

  • Deep understanding of software testing practices across unit, integration, and end-to-end testing.

  • Strong technical problem-solving and system design skills.

  • Ability to balance hands-on technical contributions with team leadership responsibilities.

  • Strong communication and stakeholder collaboration skills across technical and non-technical teams.

  • Experience leveraging AI-enabled development tools to support engineering workflows, documentation, and testing preferred.

  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.

  • Ability to show ownership of your work, take on challenges and acknowledge growth opportunities, and demonstrate patience when learning new processes

  • Courtesy, respect, and thoughtfulness in teaming with colleagues and other stakeholders

This position has an estimated base salary of 170k-190k plus a discretionary bonus. An employment offer is based on the applicant’s relevant work experience, applicable knowledge, skills, abilities, internal equity, and alignment with market data.
