About Clipboard

Our mission is to uplift as many communities as possible. We do this through our app-based marketplace that connects healthcare professionals with the workplaces that need amazing workers. This enables hundreds of thousands of people to achieve financial stability for themselves and their families while providing essential care to millions of people across the U.S.

Founded in 2016, we are a remote-first team of over 1,000 people building a top Y-Combinator company and have been profitable since 2022. We’re the leader in Long-Term Care staffing and are rapidly expanding into Home Health, Hospitals, and more, meaning we have more work to do than people to do it, and are growing our team to support millions more people and their communities.

Engineering at Clipboard is deeply embedded in the business. Our engineers are technically strong and own the full software development lifecycle, from design and implementation through deployment and ongoing support. They have real autonomy over their work and are expected to take full ownership of what they build. They also work closely with product and operations, and also directly with customers, solving complex marketplace and operational problems that impact thousands of healthcare workers and facilities every day. Because of this, our Engineering Managers are expected to help maintain a high technical and execution bar across the team. A big part of the role is understanding how engineers think, helping challenge ideas when needed, and creating an environment where the team can consistently produce high-quality work.

More about the Role

We are looking for an Engineering Manager to lead high-impact engineering teams building core parts of our marketplace and internal systems. Engineering Managers at Clipboard are expected to stay close to the engineering work even if they are not coding day-to-day. The role involves balancing technical direction, execution, and people development while working closely across functions in a fast-moving environment.

A big part of the role is balancing execution and people development. You will help the team ship consistently in a fast-paced environment while also coaching and mentoring engineers so they can continue to grow in their careers.

Moreover, this role sits between engineering, product, and operations. Things move quickly, and priorities shift as tradeoffs come up. We are looking for someone who can make clear decisions when things are unclear and keep the team focused on what matters the most. Strong judgment and prioritization are important at Clipboard, knowing what to prioritize and how to break down work in a way that actually drives results.

More about the Team

We are hiring Engineering Managers across several teams, where each team owns a full slice of the product experience end-to-end from what users see to the systems behind it.Teams are typically four to six engineers, working closely with product and operations to drive outcomes in their area.

We currently have eight teams and we expect more as we continue to grow and expand into new areas of the business. Some teams work on systems where correctness is critical such as payouts, invoicing, and fraud prevention. Other teams focus on direct customer-facing parts of the marketplace, where the work involves a lot of operational complexity and fast iteration. We also have teams building new product areas from scratch, where there is more ambiguity. There will also be opportunities to lead experimental strike teams focused on high-priority, greenfield initiatives that require fast execution and strong ownership.

While each team owns a different problem space, the way we operate is fairly consistent across the organization. We align on team structure and matching during the interview process based on background and interests. You can find more information on the team and areas of work from this page.

What we are looking for

We care less about polished narratives and more about how someone thinks through problems.A successful Engineering Manager at Clipboard demonstrates the following traits:

  • First-principles Thinking: we value people who do not rely on past experience by default, but dive deep to understand what is actually going on before deciding what to do.

  • Customer-centricity: we care about people who stay close to the customer and use that context to make decisions and prioritize work.

  • Ownership and Judgement: we look for people who take responsibility for outcomes, make clear calls on what matters, and help teams move forward, treating their area like their own business.

  • Technical Strength: we expect Engineering Managers to stay close enough to the work to understand tradeoffs, support good technical decisions, and know when something does not feel right.

The Interview Process

At Clipboard, we don’t believe proxies are a reliable way to measure ability. We prefer to evaluate candidates by having them do work that closely resembles the actual job. Our process is designed around that:

  1. Async Technical Design Document (TDD) Review, followed by a 1-hour discussion with our Engineering Leadership team

  2. Async EM Scenario Exercise, followed by a 1-hour discussion with our Engineering Leadership team

  3. Hiring Manager Interview with our CPO

  4. Executive Interview with our co-CEO

  5. Offer!
