About us

Intellum is the leader in corporate education technology and powers the largest, most successful customer, partner, and employee learning programs in the world. Large brands and fast-moving companies like Google, Meta, Amazon, Walmart, Xero, Atlassian, Mailchimp, Airbnb, Stripe, and TikTok rely on Intellum to engage and educate the audiences they touch.

We have always been a “remote first” company and are proud to have team members located all over the world. We value Curiosity, Creativity, Perseverance, and Kindness and strive to demonstrate these core values every day. Our culture is very important to us. We invest in our people in fun and exciting ways, including personal development budgets and an annual all-company retreat that is focused less on work and more on human connections. We are in growth mode, and our “smart growth” approach ensures that we will continue to scale our company effectively.

This is a remote role, open to candidates based in the U.S. Eastern Time Zone. You’ll work closely with teammates across the East Coast and Europe, making consistent overlap with those working hours important for success in the role.

We are seeking a hands-on Engineering Manager who leads by example, contributing to design discussions, writing and reviewing code, and staying close to the systems the team owns.

In this role, you will manage a team of ~4 front-end and back-end engineers while driving clear, accountable execution across product development, technical improvements, and operational responsibilities. You will also partner closely with Product, Quality Assurance, and peer engineering teams to enhance and scale Intellum’s platform.

Success in this role requires balancing business value delivery with long-term maintainability by setting priorities, protecting focus, resolving blockers, and ensuring solutions are reliable, secure, and well-supported in production.

Responsibilities
  • Manage the team in a hands-on capacity, writing and reviewing code, guiding technical decisions, and staying close to the systems you’re responsible for.
  • Drive predictable execution by setting priorities, managing scope, and ensuring releases deliver measurable business value on time and on budget.
  • Maintain high code quality, reliability, and security standards, and reinforce best practices.
  • Evaluate technical approaches for feasibility and long-term sustainability, balancing simplicity, scalability, and business timelines.
  • Oversee incident response and on-call practices, resolving production issues promptly and ensuring root causes are addressed with durable fixes.
  • Sustain a high-performing team by setting clear expectations, protecting focus, removing blockers, ensuring work is seen through to completion, and providing regular feedback and coaching to support growth.
  • Collaborate closely with peers, Product, and other stakeholders to align engineering work with business priorities.
  • Communicate progress, risks, and tradeoffs effectively to all stakeholders, escalating when necessary and maintaining trust through transparency.

Skills & Qualifications
  • 5+ years of professional software engineering experience.
  • Engineering supervisory and/or management experience, contributing technically while guiding others.
  • Strong proficiency in JavaScript and Node.js is a requirement as you'll be actively coding in this role.
  • Experience across modern web technologies, such as HTML, CSS, React, Rails/Node, and relational or document databases (e.g., Postgres, MongoDB).
  • Hands-on experience with RESTful API design and building scalable backend services.
  • Experience supporting production systems, including participation in on-call rotations or incident response.
  • Track record of driving projects to completion and holding delivery commitments.
  • Strong communication skills, capable of translating technical decisions into clear business tradeoffs and implications; balances confidence in technical expertise with the humility to adapt, ask questions, and continuously learn from peers, reports, and stakeholders.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent professional experience.

Technical Interview & Case Study
You’ll participate in a technical discussion that includes a real-world case study. We’ll ask you to walk us through your thinking, approach, and decision-making. You’ll also have the opportunity to share code you’ve written and discuss it with members of our engineering team.

Interview with Key Stakeholders
You’ll meet with cross-functional partners and other key stakeholders to explore collaboration, communication style, and how we work together across the organization.
