About ngrok Inc.

At ngrok, we believe that doing networking the right way should also be the easy way. Over the last 10 years, we’ve given developers and engineers simple interfaces for getting traffic into their apps and APIs without forcing them to deal with legacy proxies, external load balancers, or VPNs, and we’re now part of the standard stack for more than 9 million developers at some of the world’s top technology brands, like GitHub, Okta, HashiCorp, and Twilio.

Over the last few years, we’ve completely changed how that interface looks and works to make it easier, more composable, and infinitely flexible. We now give anyone who needs a “front door” to their apps or APIs powerful tools to orchestrate traffic, secure public endpoints, accelerate their services on a global network, observe all traffic passing to/from their network, and much more. The ngrok that millions love and trust has been completely transformed for the better.

The opportunity

As an Engineering Manager, you'll grow, manage, and coach a team of 5-7 software engineers. Your team will operate within our Project Oriented team structure both designing new product offerings across the product line and maintaining existing services within your teams area of expertise.

A successful candidate views engineering management like a systems design challenge with the wonderful chaos and humanity of working directly with people. You will thrive on enabling your team's success, coaching junior and senior folks alike, encouraging bold thinking and action, and growing with the company. While you may not be in the code every day, our managers get into the thick of it with their teams, utilizing past experience as engineers.

This is a remote position for candidates outside of the Bay Area and a hybrid role for candidates within commuting distance to San Francisco. Our Bay Area employees commute to the office on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. At this time, ngrok is unable to provide visa sponsorship for this position. Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States on a permanent, ongoing basis without the need for current or future sponsorship.

  • With your onboarding buddy, make your first commit and deploy
  • Drive continuous learning and improvement with your team through execution, retrospection, and celebration

Within 6 months

  • Drive sustainable success for the team by planning effectively each quarter- balancing product work, technical investments, and experiments
  • Earn trust and build customer empathy by working regularly in an area of the codebase and engaging with our operations
  • Enhance the capabilities of the team through continuous coaching, hiring a diverse and efficient team, and fostering psychological safety
  • Empower great, local, team decisions, providing current business and product context

Within 1 year

  • Work with leadership to create and implement process around performance and organizational infrastructure
  • Represent ngrok publicly: on our blog, speaking at meetups, via open-source contributions
  • Be an engineering leader who contributes to a healthy and growing organizational culture
Skills
  • 5+ years of experience as a software engineer using Go or other compiled languages
  • 4+ years experience as a technical lead or engineering manager
  • Excellent verbal, written, and engineering communication skills
  • Experience building (process, tech, etc.) from scratch: e.g. at a startup or on a new team
  • Bonus points
    • External contributions to open source projects, conferences, or blogs
    • Related domain knowledge
