The EHS Design and Compliance Engineer ensures that Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) requirements are implemented at all stages of an investment project, in line with Lonza's policies, procedures, and legal regulations. This role focuses on evaluating safety impacts throughout the project lifecycle- from feasibility studies to detailed design - while ensuring Lonza's EHS procedures are applied, particularly within the GE Growth project and Visp CAPEX initiatives.

As a member of the EHS team, the role actively fosters a strong EHS culture within CAPEX and investment projects. The EHS Design and Compliance Engineer reports operationally to the EHS Design Manager.

We are looking for someone specializing in EHS with a focus on either Fire Safety or Environment.

Fire Safety main accountabilities:

  • Responsible for ensuring compliance with fire protection requirements in accordance with VKF Guideline 12 Fire Prevention and Organizational Fire Protection on the assigned construction sites

  • Ensuring coordination between all internal and external fire protection departments (authorities, emergency services, specialist planners, engineering, etc.)

  • Ensuring internal fire protection measures within the framework of construction site continuity

  • Advising project teams, clients, fire protection and specialist planners as part of planning, execution, acceptance and initial commissioning

  • Support in ensuring the completeness of all conformity and declarations of conformity for ongoing and completed projects

  • Carries out BS audits independently and defines measures for the operators

Environment main accountabilities:

  • Assess the environmental impact of new plants in terms of exhaust air, wastewater, waste, noise and resource consumption in collaboration with the project engineers.

  • Defines measures to reduce the environmental impact to a minimum.

  • Summarizes the results in an environmental impact report for the authorities as part of the construction permit submission.

  • Participates in risk analyses (environmental topics)

Key Responsibilities:

  • Masters in Pharmaceutical Technology, Chemistry, Process Engineering, Safety Engineer or equivalent

  • Working closely with a team of EHS project managers and EHS SMEs and
    Specialists – acting as coordinator and single point of contact (SPOC)

  • Responsible for supporting to meet the overall EHS Safety budget

  • Proven process understanding of design safety and legal safety demands in the pharmaceutical environment or similar

  • Very strong communication skills in German and English, both verbal and written

  • Strong presentation skills for developing and delivering training to elevate knowledge, skills and behaviors at multiple levels of the organization

  • Dealing with high level of ambiguity using coaching skills
