Description of Work

This Historic Interpreter II position functions as Education Coordinator and is responsible for attracting, scheduling, and conducting education programs and field trips at Reed Gold Mine State Historic Site in Midland, North Carolina. This position works a Tuesday through Saturday schedule, with occasional night or weekend work.
Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
• Providing daily visitor services including orienting visitors, giving guided tours, and assisting with gold panning.
• Serve as the sites Education Coordinator by scheduling groups, providing educational programming and managing site calendars.
• Assist with developing and planning special events.
• Assist with site gift shop sales.
• Supervise part time staff in absence of Assistant Site Manager.

Recruitment Range: $32,287.00 - $40,232.00

Position/Physical Requirements 

  • Must be available to work the schedule of Tuesday - Saturday 8:00am - 5:00 pm.

  • Must be able to lift at least 50 pounds with or without reasonable accommodations.

  • Must be able to work outside in a wide range of temperatures.

  • Must be able to work while standing and moving for long stretches of time.

Minimum Education and Experience

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma

AND

three years of experience in giving or developing museum tours;

OR

an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Section/Unit Description 

Reed Gold Mine preserves North Carolina’s gold mining heritage with an emphasis on the Reed mine, the site of the first documented gold discovery in the United States. The site consists of 888 acres and features a Visitor Center with gift shop and museum, restored underground tunnels, an operating stamp mill, hiking trails, and a gold panning activity area. Approximately 35,000 visitors come annually to experience the site, including around 18,000 youth and school students. Several special events are held each year and many off-site presentations serve to attract visitors and inform about gold and gold mining in North Carolina.

The Division of State Historic Sites was established to coordinate administration of the Department of Natural and Cultural Resources’ State Historic Sites Program, which includes 27 historic sites across North Carolina and Division offices located in Raleigh. Veteran’s and National Guard Preference 

Applicants seeking Veteran’s Preference must attach a DD Form 214, Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty, along with the state application.

Sign On Bonus Eligibility
