The Editorial Designer is responsible for designing various pages of the Weekly Edition, including topic pages and covers, while collaborating with the editorial team and managing production schedules.
Job Summary & Responsibilities
- Design topic pages, news pages, special sections, Lists, Public Records, and other inside pages ofthe Weekly Edition
- Design inside pages for awards sections, focus sections and other special publications
- Design cover and cover stories usually 1-3 times per month for print and digital platforms
- Build and oversee the dummy for weekly paper; interact with Ad Director, Editor and other market staff about space needs and changes during the production cycle
- Create InDesign pages for weekly paper, special publications and Book of Lists
- Tone photos and create PDFs
- Create social media graphics
- Attend and participate in editorial planning meetings
- Identify and attend training opportunities
- Take on other duties assigned by Regional Creative Director as needed
The ideal candidate has:
- Background in journalism, design and data visualization
- Media design experience and expertise in Adobe CC design tools — InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator and Acrobat
- Experience editing and toning photos, creating illustrations, and coming up with non-narrative, creative visual solutions
- Experience working with third-party design tools such as Infogr.am, MapCreator and others
- Understanding of local market newsrooms and how they operate on a daily basis
- Ability to multitask and work in a fast-paced environment
- Excellent communication, cross-group collaboration, and planning skills with a strict attention to details, process and deadlines
