Role Summary
The Director, VPP Operations will own Renew Home's VPP operations, spanning Markets and Utilities. You will be responsible for translating complex regulatory and market requirements into error-free operational workflows, ensuring the day-to-day fulfillment of our energy market contracts portfolio.
As the Director, VPP Operations, you will be a proactive, detail-oriented leader, you and your team, will drive operational excellence from strategy to execution. You'll not only manage existing processes but also be empowered to implement and improve them to ensure our VPP meets its ambitious goals. As a critical link to internal teams like Policy, Product, Engineering, and Legal, you will establish and refine operational processes that ensure we meet our contractual and regulatory commitments.
What You Will Do
- Own Operational Strategy & Excellence: You'll design, implement, and continuously improve operational strategies and tools to ensure error-free execution that meets both regulatory and business goals.
- Manage VPP Operations: Oversee the day-to-day operational tasks required to run our VPPs across the California and New York electric markets, including contract fulfillment, compliance submissions and reporting, market bidding and event planning, and alignment with future product development. You will help prepare us for expansion into new markets, as required by the business.
- Cross-team Leadership: You will be the key operational point of contact for multiple teams, including Engineering, Product, Finance, Legal, and Policy. You will proactively communicate operational updates and advocate for the needs of our VPP.
- Ensure Regulatory Compliance: Act as a key owner that collaborates with the Policy Managers to ensure compliance with regulatory rules and market rules. Be able to translate regulatory requirements into clear, actionable internal workflows, processes, and deliverables to meet or exceed requirements. When there are regulatory updates and decisions, you will lead the charge in translating regulatory requirements into clear, actionable internal workflows and adapting downstream operational processes. Participate in cross functional team regulatory submissions as the operational subject matter expert.
- Project Management: You will be responsible for a wide range of operational projects, from scoping and managing timelines to ensuring all stakeholders are aligned. Your role will include breaking down complex tasks into manageable deliverables and communicating progress effectively to the team.
- Data Analysis & Reporting: Utilize Excel and data tools like Sisense to generate insights and track Market VPP performance.
- Manage External Engagement: Serve as a primary point of contact for external parties, including regulatory agencies and contract counterparties. You will also ensure a complete and coordinated view of all external relationships to guarantee contract compliance and deliver on data requests.
- 7+ years of experience in electric market operations or trading, with direct experience in the California energy market (CAISO) strongly preferred.
- Strong quantitative and analytical skills, with the ability to interpret and synthesize complex data.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel (modeling, analysis, and reporting).
- Experience managing analysts and junior team members, providing guidance, mentorship and oversight of deliverables.
- Project management expertise: proven ability to scope projects, manage timelines, prioritize competing tasks, and clearly communicate progress.
- Process-oriented mindset, with a track record of identifying and resolving inefficiencies to drive operational excellence.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to distill complex topics for diverse audiences and clearly articulate rationale.
- Self-directed and proactive, able to take ownership of projects, seek guidance when needed, and break down work into manageable deliverables.
- Collaborative problem-solver, comfortable working across teams in a communicative and supportive manner.
- Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field, or equivalent work experience.
- Ability to thrive in a fully remote environment, managing work independently while staying connected with colleagues.
- Bonuses:

- Background in regulatory processes or policy engagement.

- Ability to prioritize effectively in high-volume, fast-moving environments where not everything can be done at once.

- A full-time position, with a competitive salary based on experience. The base salary for this role is: $170k - $205k.
