The Opportunity

At Root, we’re reimagining car insurance by building a smarter, more equitable system from the ground up.

We're looking for a product leader who has built and scaled data-driven, customer-centric platforms—someone who doesn’t just operate at the intersection of product and strategy, but thrives there.

If you’ve led teams through ambiguity, architected business-transforming bets, and can rally engineers, analysts, and executives alike—this is your role. You won’t just improve processes—you’ll redefine what product excellence looks like in one of the most critical areas of our business.

Root is a “work where it works best” company. This means we will support you working in whatever location that works best for you across the US.

Salary Range: $210,000 - $270,000 (Also eligible for competitive bonus and equity offering)

How You Will Make an Impact

Product Strategy & Execution (50%)

  • Help Root build the insurance platform of the future
  • Own and evolve Root’s Core Insurance platform strategy (pricing, underwriting, carrier management, and claims) in alignment with the company’s long-term vision
  • Drive critical product bets from first-principles thinking, build compelling product visions, and secure executive buy-in
  • Collaborate with cross-functional leaders to bring new ML-driven pricing, underwriting, carrier management, and claims products to market
  • Establish and track north-star metrics that demonstrate clear product impact on business outcomes

Team Leadership & Development (50%)

  • Be a talent magnet—hire, grow, and retain exceptional PMs
  • Instill product rigor: teach “why” before “how,” and push your team to focus on impact over output
  • Improve end-to-end team performance by designing systems that reinforce speed, alignment, and accountability
  • Implement scalable planning and product development practices—but only where they drive real outcomes
  • Partner with cross-functional leaders (design, engineering, analytics, etc.) to raise the bar on product delivery and collaboration

What You Will Need to Succeed

Experienced leader: You’ve held the title of Director and have directly managed product managers in a product-led environment

Builder mindset: You’ve created 0→1 products and led critical product transformations; you’re not just optimizing or maintaining, you’ve truly brought net new value to the world

Data-native: You use data to gain clarity, not to confirm bias. You let the data change your mind—and you react with curiosity when it surprises you

Business-focused: You connect product decisions to revenue, cost, and growth. You’ve made tough resource allocation tradeoffs and lived with the consequences

Technically literate: You’ve worked in product orgs that leverage ML, API-first architecture, or configuration layers and can think systemically across a platform

Curious and bold: You challenge assumptions, ask why things exist the way they do, and believe great product leadership is part invention, part negotiation, part evangelism
