Primary Purpose
The Director of Applications Development Next Gen POS is the strategic leader of the solution strategy, solution ecosystem development and delivery of a unified next generation point-of-sale program leveraging modern architecture to enable operational excellence and our growing omnichannel ambitions. This will be achieved through the execution of this modern Next Gen solution delivering strong, resilient and reliable foundations for all transactions and payments across our US businesses and all ecosystem capabilities (custom development as well as 3rd party systems) including finance, cash office capabilities, loss prevention capabilities, Rx & fuel point-of-sale capabilities, etc. With the foundational solution in pilot, we are looking to expand the overall team and drive efforts. This role is responsible for the execution of these inter-related projects and for the continued operational support of the systems associated within this assigned business area.
This senior-level role demands a seasoned professional capable of orchestrating complex roadmaps and programs across delivery initiatives, aligning technology with business strategies, fostering innovation for operational excellence and effectively managing across multiple IT and Business teams. This role requires high technical proficiency, excellent talent development skills, and exceptional collaboration and communication skills. This leader is responsible for leading, developing and managing technical teams with ownership of several SaaS, COTS systems and custom-developed software solutions using legacy and/or modern web, mobile and cloud technologies. This role requires someone with strong execution abilities, a desire to partner and collaborate with the various functions within the business and IT, and a desire to grow and coach a team. This position is responsible for ensuring adherence to compliance, IT controls, and quality procedures. This role has oversight of the largest and most complex programs in the ADUSA (Ahold Delhaize USA) IT portfolio. This role will be responsible for developing the correct foundational IT capabilities to allow ADUSA to meet its aggressive strategic targets and remain relevant in the competitive retail grocery industry.
Our flexible/ hybrid work schedule includes 3 in-person days at one of our core locations and 2 remote days. Our core office locations for this position include include Salisbury, NC, Quincy, MA, or Chicago, IL. Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis.
Duties and Responsibilities• Demonstrate a solid understanding of the business functions and how the technology solutions support the business operations, and how the solutions need to be deployed and supported.• Direct the continuous improvement of the Information Technology staff, development tools and procedures to maintain pace with technological progress, economic change, and business needs.• Responsible for building and sustaining a strong performance management culture.• Ensure that solutions integrate seamlessly with other related connected solutions.• Oversee software life cycle management, providing roadmaps, asset deployment, inventory control and asset disposal adhering to corporate asset management policy and procedures.• Oversee and ensure proper design, standards governance, stability, and continuous improvements of software solutions / systems.• Contribute heavily to technical design patterns, principles, and architectures with a focus also on continuous improvement.• Act as a trusted advisor, and builds and maintains relationships with other IT teams, business stakeholders and senior executives to develop a clear understanding of enterprise needs; ensures cost-effective delivery of operations to meet those needs, and can respond with agility to changing priorities.• Develop and execute the annual operating and capital expenditure budget for IT operations to ensure it is consistent with overall strategic objectives of IT and the enterprise and is within plan.• Collaborate with other IT teams, such as Data & Analytics, Infrastructure, and Service Delivery as well as other Solution Delivery teams to ensure technical requirements in those areas are clearly communicated and planned to ensure execution and mitigate risks.• Lead and provide direction for development and engineering of solutions by vendors or internal engineering teams.• Oversee team to ensure that all project communications, KPIs, and reporting are timely, accurate, and complete.• Lead the team to focus on continuous improvement in value optimization, IT performance, and business processes.• Ensure solutions and services meet the needs of the business; delivered efficiently and in budget.• Partner with stakeholders to remediate issues and ensure services meet contracted SLAs (service level agreements) and KPIs.• Identify customer challenges to realize their future of work and build appropriate solutions by working with internal/external stakeholders.• Partner with vendors and external suppliers of Software and Services to deliver efficient functionality for IT and business stakeholders.• Additional job duties may be assigned as needed to meet the needs of the business and support our Values.
Qualifications• Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, CIS or related (or equivalent related work experience).• 15 or more years of equivalent experience in a relevant job or field of technology, in an advanced role or technical capacity.• 5 or more years' experience directly responsible for building high performing teams and scalable best practices to meet outcomes.• Experience with large complex solutions (e.g. packaged ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) bespoke, distributed and legacy technology solutions.• Strong leadership skills including the ability to collaborate and build strong relationships at all levels and translate technical topics into understandable outcomes and business/financial impacts.• Point-of-Sale and Payments expert with detailed knowledge on the technical architecture and solutions design of leading point-of-sale systems serving the grocery retail segment (Toshiba, NCRV, others), as well as experience implementing these solutions at scale.• Broad grocery retail and/or point-of-sale industry knowledge of modernizing complex federated solutions with numerous 3rd party integrations into modern, containerized micro-services-based solutions.• Experience working with POS vendors to customize solutions and troubleshoot issues.• Excellent verbal, written, and presentation skills with demonstrated ability to effectively communicate technical and business issues and solutions to multiple organizational levels internally and externally and influence outcomes.• Proficiency in performing risk, business impact, control, and vulnerability assessments, and in defining treatment strategies.• Ability to plan, prioritize and drive issues, tasks, and deliverables from concept to closure.• Solid understanding of and demonstrated ability to apply Waterfall and Agile development methodologies.• Experience with system integration, diagnosing and resolving technical issues, and conducting data analysis.• Experience with NoSQL databases such as MongoDB or Cassandra for handling large volumes of unstructured data, which can be useful for real-time analytics and customer behavior tracking.• Knowledge of payment security standards and best practices to protect customer data.• Experience with Extract, Transform, Load (ETL) tools like Apache Nifi, Talend, or Informatica to integrate POS data with other systems such as CRM and ERP.• Knowledge of integrating databases with POS systems using APIs to ensure seamless data flow between different platforms.
Preferred Qualifications• Master's Degree in relevant field of study, additional training or certifications in relevant field of study.• Experience in Agile teams and/or Product/Platform based operating model and advancing technical capability in team members.• Experience in retail or grocery industry.• Successful demonstration of working on complex programs spanning multiple technologies and across various functions in a value stream.• Proven business and financial acumen and the ability to manage multiple areas while balancing technical requirements with business needs and affordability.• Experience with vendor performance management, including development and monitoring of SOWs and deliverables, SLA (Service Level Agreement) compliance, and general vendor relationship management.• Ability to effectively interact and engage with Executive team members.• Proactively partners with technology and business leaders to gather and interpret requirements for existing and modern technology deployments.• Leverages influencing and negotiation skills across IT and the enterprise to enable cost-effective and innovative shared solutions in achievement of enterprise goals.
NC Salary Range: $161,600 - $242,400
IL/MA Salary Range: $185,840 - $278,760
