Position Overview:
cQuant is seeking a Director of Energy Analytics to provide expertise and leadership in energy finance, quantitative analytics, and portfolio optimization for the wholesale electric power industry. This position will interface directly with cQuant’s customers, primarily within solution definition and delivery phases of the customer journey, guiding projects and teams to ensure analytical best practices are understood and adhered to, and taking accountability for overall project success. Importantly, the Director of Energy Analytics will bridge the gap between energy industry practitioners and those at cQuant who develop, deliver, and support our analytical software solutions. As such, the Director must understand how to leverage robust and complex energy analytics theory within the constraints of day-to-day business operations, leading teams to identify, implement, and validate solutions using cQuant’s existing analytical capabilities and delivering tangible business value to the customer. Further, the Director must tailor communication to be effective across a broad range of stakeholders, from non-technical executives to senior analysts or “quants”, articulating the business value cQuant provides and explaining or defending its analytical methodologies when necessary.
The Director of Energy Analytics will also be responsible for managing, mentoring, and expanding teams of Energy Analysts within the United States, Europe, and Asia. The successful candidate will be familiar with the challenges of growing and leading technical teams across multiple geographies while ensuring consistently high-quality team output and maintaining strong employee retention. Direct line management experience is a must for this position.
Finally, the Director of Energy Analytics will consult as needed across other functional areas within cQuant including Solution Engineering (technical pre-sales), Customer Success, Quantitative Development, and Marketing. They will provide senior-level subject matter expertise on topics involving quantitative analytics, statistical and time series analysis, risk management, portfolio optimization, financial derivatives and heavily structured products, among others. They will prepare and deliver presentations for conferences and industry events and will contribute to written thought leadership to help promote cQuant’s presence as an analytical leader within the energy industry.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead projects to implement cQuant’s software solutions for new customers, managing complex stakeholder engagements and aligning solution delivery with practical business constraints to ensure project success.
- Advise customers on best practices for using cQuant to model complex structured transactions, physical assets, or other positions, identifying innovative new applications of existing functionality to serve business needs where possible.
- Provide energy finance, risk management, and quantitative modeling subject matter expertise within high-profile technical pre-sales engagements, promoting cQuant’s methodology and helping to win new business.
- Serve as a “knowledge bridge” between market practitioners and cQuant’s quantitative delivery, support, and modeling teams, facilitating the transfer of knowledge and expertise in both directions.
- Become an expert in cQuant’s industry-leading energy analytics software platform and provide detailed methodological training, guidance, and discussion directly to cQuant’s users and associated executive stakeholders.
- Provide line management, mentorship, and day-to-day oversight for Energy Analysts across U.S., European, and Asian teams, overseeing several as direct-report staff.
- Embrace a software development mindset by helping to communicate timelines and set client expectations for feature updates in a way that allows cQuant’s development team to successfully meet targets.
Required Qualifications
- 7+ years of wholesale electric power industry experience in a risk management, asset valuation, deal structuring, or consulting role.
- M.S. or Ph.D. degree in a quantitative discipline (mathematics, quantitative finance, economics, statistics, computer science, physics).
- Direct experience managing and scaling technical teams.
- Subject matter expertise on stochastic valuation and risk management approaches for multi-commodity, mulit-asset-class energy portfolios, specifically including Net Position at Risk (NPaR), Gross Margin at Risk (GMaR), Value at Risk (VaR), and similar.
- Deep experience in wholesale renewable energy and battery storage valuation and risk management including expert knowledge of power purchase agreements and associated contracting structures.
- Expertise in valuation and risk management approaches for thermal generation assets (e.g., natural gas combined cycle and peaking plants) including a detailed understanding of constrained economic dispatch optimization techniques and how various plant-specific operational characteristics drive value and risk.
- Deep knowledge of United States and/or European wholesale electricity markets including regional pricing trends/dynamics and impacts on asset value and risk. Multi-regional expertise is strongly preferred.
- Prior work experience with risk management for oil and gas, LNG, liquids, and other energies in addition to electric power is preferred.
- Experience growing/scaling technical teams is strongly preferred, ideally quantitative teams within the electric power industry space.
- Broad experience with different asset classes. At a minimum pretty strong expertise in thermal, renewable, and financial derivatives. Experience with batteries is a plus.
- Very strong communication is essential. Must be engaging in both written and verbal format.
- Proficiency using Microsoft Excel for pivot tables/charts, ad hoc data analysis, and report-quality visualizations.
- Experience managing, mentoring, and growing technical teams, preferably across multiple geographies and time zones.
- Demonstrated ability to operate either independently or within a close-knit team amid a fast-paced results-oriented professional environment.
- Familiarity with the use of R or Python for routine data “wrangling” and analysis is preferred.
