THE OPPORTUNITY

ActBlue seeks a Deputy Chief Legal Officer to serve as the senior legal executive and strategic partner to our Chief Legal Officer. This senior leadership role is designed for a seasoned attorney who will provide expert legal counsel across all aspects of our operations while overseeing critical legal functions including government investigations, compliance programs, and litigation management. The Deputy CLO will play a pivotal role in protecting ActBlue's mission-critical work in the democratic process while managing complex legal challenges in a rapidly evolving regulatory environment.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

  • Serve as the Chief Legal Officer's primary strategic partner and proxy, providing high-level legal counsel to executive leadership, the board, and senior stakeholders on complex legal matters affecting ActBlue's operations and mission
  • Lead and coordinate all aspects of government investigations, serving as primary interface with outside counsel and ensuring comprehensive response strategies
  • Develop, implement, and oversee comprehensive compliance programs including fraud prevention tools, account use policies, and internal control systems to ensure adherence to all applicable laws and regulations
  • Supervise and mentor legal department staff including contract lawyers and other attorneys, providing guidance on complex legal matters, case management, and professional development while ensuring alignment with departmental goals
  • Oversee litigation strategy, manage relationships with e-discovery vendors and outside counsel, conduct legal research, and ensure effective discovery collection processes across all legal matters
  • Provide expert legal guidance on employment matters, contracts, corporate governance, intellectual property, and other business-critical legal issues affecting ActBlue's operations
  • Oversee legal review and counseling for ActBlue's technology products and platform features, ensuring compliance with applicable laws while enabling product innovation and development
  • Manage legal matters related to consumer protection regulations, insurance coverage issues, and related compliance requirements affecting ActBlue's operations
  • Develop and oversee comprehensive legal program management systems, including legal intake processes, matter tracking, and departmental workflow optimization
  • Lead response to subpoenas, legal process service, and information requests from government entities, courts, and other parties while protecting ActBlue's interests and stakeholder privacy
  • Provide legal guidance on business partnerships, technology transitions, vendor agreements, and other strategic business relationships
  • Proactively identify legal and regulatory risks, develop comprehensive mitigation strategies, and ensure that business operations align with legal requirements and best practices
  • Create and maintain internal legal policies, procedures, and guidelines that support ActBlue's mission while ensuring regulatory compliance and operational effectiveness

WHAT YOU BRING

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an ABA-accredited law school and active membership in good standing with a state bar association
  • Minimum 10+ years of progressive legal experience with 5+ years in leadership roles, demonstrating deep expertise in corporate law, compliance, and complex legal matter management
  • Significant experience as in-house counsel at large corporations or Fortune 100-level organizations, with demonstrated ability to navigate complex regulatory environments
  • Proven track record managing government investigations, regulatory enforcement actions, and interactions with federal agencies including DOJ, SEC, FEC, and congressional committees
  • Extensive experience developing, implementing, and overseeing comprehensive compliance programs, internal controls, and risk management systems
  • Strong background in litigation oversight, including managing outside counsel, discovery processes, and complex legal disputes

This posting is for a full-time, remote, salaried position. Travel may be required on a limited basis to attend all-staff and departmental retreats (1-2 times per year). Additional travel may be required for select positions.

*While ActBlue is currently registered to support remote work in the states listed above, we possess the ability to register in additional states as needed. Work Schedule: This role requires availability during established, regular business hours (Mon-Fri).

Work Environment: Employees can expect to work with distributed teams across all U.S. time zones. Our roles require extended technology usage, and proficiency with virtual communication tools such as Zoom and Slack. Regular attendance in virtual meetings is inherent to every position.

Salary Range Details:

Salary Range: $182,000 - $228,000 - $274,000 

ActBlue is committed to consistent compensation practices across our organization. Final salary offers will take into account factors such as candidate experience, interview performance and current team salary parity.
